Ruby shares her new immersive EP Verdict, a seven-track project that turns the fallout of a toxic relationship into a courtroom drama, inviting the listener to hear the evidence and decide for themselves: guilty or not guilty?

Opening with ‘Court in Session’, the EP immediately establishes its world. Across six further chapters, Ruby lays out her case, moving through betrayal, anger, doubt, resentment and, ultimately, acceptance. Rather than simply documenting the end of a relationship, ‘Verdict’ places the listener inside the story, presenting each track as another piece of evidence in a trial where Ruby is both witness and defendant.
“I present my evidence to you, the public,” explains Ruby. “Once you've listened to the entire EP, it's your decision, am I guilty or not guilty? Following my trial and conviction at a kangaroo court I wrote this 5 track EP at the lowest point in my life having lost what I thought was everything. It takes you through the highs, the lows, and all the anger in between following the breakdown of a toxic relationship. So, guilty or not guilty?”
Sonically, ‘Verdict’ sits firmly in indie rock, built around guitars, atmospheric production and Ruby’s direct, emotionally charged songwriting. The EP shifts between punchier, more rock-driven moments and stripped-back tracks, reflecting the instability of the relationship itself and the changing emotions that come with its aftermath. There’s anger, sadness, humour and plenty of bite, with Ruby never shying away from the messier parts of the story.
The evidence begins with ‘Judge and Jury’, a punchy pop-rock statement to the court, before ‘Kasey’ turns its attention to the other woman in the relationship. Hauntingly sweet and layered with vocals, the track brings a more vulnerable side to Ruby’s storytelling. ‘Wrong Guy’ follows with a change in energy, capturing that familiar moment of wondering whether you should take an ex back, only to remind yourself exactly why they became an ex in the first place.
On ‘Body Double’, Ruby takes aim at the replacement who appeared just 48 hours after being told they “couldn’t live without you”. Fast, wordy and unapologetically petty, it’s a track that reflects the more playful side of her songwriting, while also becoming a particularly breathless live favourite.
Closing the emotional arc, ‘Elastic Dreams’ marks a shift towards acceptance. Its upbeat production and catchy lyrics carry a sense of perspective, recognising that things can fall apart without meaning that you do too. The project then arrives at its final ‘Verdict’, leaving the listener to make their own judgement after hearing Ruby’s side of the story.
Self-described as a “lanky redhead who writes songs directly from your diary pages,” Ruby brings an unfiltered, often witty perspective to the EP. ‘Verdict’ is deeply personal, but its themes are far from isolated. Betrayal, second-guessing, anger and trying to make sense of a relationship after it ends are all given a place within Ruby’s courtroom, while the decision is ultimately handed over to the listener.
