With lyrics that acknowledge the natural drift of love, the song grapples with the difficult but necessary act of moving forward. Yet, despite the heartache, "Spare Key" carries a sense of hope, expressing that maybe, just maybe, if it’s meant to be, it will find its way back when the time is right.
Speaking on the story behind Spare Key, Hazel Rose shares; “This song is about the kind of love that once filled your world and made everything feel like home, but over time, you realise your home is just a house now,” Hazel Rose shares. “It’s about the unknown that comes with letting go, making plans for your own life, and holding onto the hope that life might bring you back together later, when you’re older, when things are different. It’s bittersweet, but I truly believe that if it’s meant to be, it will be.”
The track was recorded with a full band and features a unique touch – field recordings of birds heard during the songwriting process in Barcelona. These natural sounds blend seamlessly with the emotive instrumentation, adding an organic and intimate layer to the song's reflective tone.
