Today Bay Area-based band Bliss Abyss is excited to release their new single “Star.” The song debuted today at Post-Punk and is on all streaming platforms for playlist shares. “Star” offers the first glimpse of what producer Joe Finocchio calls “an album of timeless singles,” marking the arrival of a band both steeped in history and pushing into new territory.

On the song the band's singer/guitarist Peter Wallner says:
The song started as a kind of spell, a vision of manifesting a life worth living. It’s meant to spark hope in anyone who’s lost.  Picture the life you want, the person you actually are, and don’t let anyone’s bullshit block your light. You’re a star, perfect as you are, made from stardust, burning through the same abyss as everyone else.

Bliss Abyss conjures a world where shoegaze haze collides with post-punk urgency, sometimes dark and angular, sometimes bright and jangly, always guided by the melodic instincts of singer-guitarist Wallner.

Though new, Bliss Abyss is rooted in decades of Bay Area music history. Wallner has long been a fixture of the scene, from the industrial shoegaze duo Astronomers Anonymous to the anthemic synth-punk trio Whisper. He played in Some Ember, pioneering a drop-tuned “Lodge Goth” guitar style inspired by composer Angelo Badalamenti, and performed under the name Peter Lightning in the post-punk outfit Wax Idols.

He later joined Heaven’s Club as a keyboardist, a move that led to a European tour with Deafheaven in 2022. Across more than a dozen projects, Wallner has refined a sound that fuses atmosphere with urgency, melancholy with melody.

Bliss Abyss began during the pandemic as a synth-pop experiment before evolving into the three-piece band it is today. The project crystallized when Wallner met producer and bassist Joe Finocchio while performing in the hardcore punk supergroup Culture Spy. After hearing early demos, Finocchio quickly signed on to produce the band’s debut album.

The forthcoming record gathers songs with distinct sonic identities yet united by Wallner’s unmistakable voice. From the euphoric shimmer of “Star” to jagged post-punk burners, each track stands on its own while contributing to a larger sonic vision. Lyrically, Wallner writes dreamlike confessions where heartbreak and desire blur together, cosmic vignettes of haunted objects, cinematic moods, and feral instincts that feel both intimate and surreal.

The current lineup features Peter Wallner, Kevin None on bass, and Josh Unger on drums.
