An intimate portrait of unreciprocated love, written in real time through tears.
Last month, avalon made waves when she dropped her gut-punchingly honest ballad, “sydney,” which found the rising pop artist processing loss in real time.
Now, avalon has released her newest single, “how to lie,” as she continues her mission to remain wholly authentic in her music. “how to lie,” is a soul-stirring reflection on loving deeply and being left unseen.
Written and recorded in the middle of heartbreak, the track captures the kind of real, unfiltered emotion that defines avalon’s music—raw, poetic, and profoundly human.
“I wrote the song almost two years ago,” avalon shares. “I was talking to someone I really liked. One day, I got a call from them during a session, and as the conversation went on, I realized I was getting dumped. I went to my Notes app and started writing poems while still on the phone—literally crying. Then I went back into the studio and sang those words with tears in my eyes and a runny nose. It was so real and raw.”
The final recording captures that very take—the sound of heartbreak as it happens. What began as a moment of pain became a source of much needed comfort.
“During that period of sadness, I would listen to the song and feel so seen and understood,” she continues. “When I teased it on social media, people said things like, ‘I can feel the emotion.’ It gives me goosebumps because that’s exactly how it was recorded.”
Though inspired by a breakup, “how to lie” speaks to something much broader—the ache of giving everything and getting almost nothing in return.
“This song is for people who love hard and love fast in any situation,” avalon says. “It’s draining and lonely sometimes. You are not alone. I see you; I hear you, and I wrote this song for you.”
avalon (born Avalon Annaliese Rose Baker) has built a reputation for turning her innermost thoughts into emotionally charged pop songs that feel both intimate and universal.
Raised in Studio City in a home steeped in creativity—her mother runs the legendary Millennium Dance Complex—avalon began writing, producing, and recording at just 14. Early demos like “Perfume” went viral on TikTok, and her official debut single “look what you did to her” (October 2024) amassed over 77 million views, establishing avalon as one of alt-pop’s most magnetic new voices.
Blending influences from Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald to Tyler, The Creator, Jon Bellion, and Billie Eilish, avalon defies boundaries with music that fuses organic instrumentation, cinematic production, and diaristic storytelling—songs that feel like reading someone’s journal by candlelight.
Beyond her music, avalon is passionate about film, photography, and supporting youth-focused charities like Mending Kids. She connects deeply with her fans through pen-pal emails, group chats, and unreleased demos—fostering the kind of genuine connection that mirrors the honesty in her songs.
“Music is the only way I truly feel heard or seen,” she says. “It helps heal, especially if it’s coming from a real place. Quite honestly, I just can’t imagine my life without it.”
