Gossiped about relentlessly and now firmly tuned into the national frequency, Moss Side Sauna Club return with new single, Fantasy, their most self-assured, high-definition transmission yet and it’s OUT NOW. The single builds on a breakout run that has seen the Manchester trio move from cult curiosity to radio-approved disruptors without sanding down their sharp edge.
If My Weird Appetite introduced the band’s woozy guitars, digitally warped production and tongue-in-cheek melodrama, it did so with immediate impact, pricking up ears across tastemaker press and radio while establishing MSSC as a band capable of turning turbulence into hook-heavy pop catharsis. Follow-up 122bpm accelerated the ascent, landing firm support at BBC 6 Music from Lauren Laverne, Chris Hawkins and New Music Fix, cementing the trio as one of the North’s most vital new propositions. Now comes Fantasy.
“This feels like it’s got everything that made our first singles so interesting and then some,” the band says, “with just enough finesse and polish to feel like we’ve finally got our big girl pants on. It’s just as jagged, gritty and angular in the verses but absolutely floating and heavenly in the choruses.”
That tension, a sense of abrasion meeting ascension, is the beating heart of MSSC. Fantasy finds the trio leaning further into their role as outliers: too pop for the purists, too strange for the strait-laced, and far too emotionally unguarded for a scene that might be mistaking irony for substance. The verses twitch and spark with wiry guitars and tightly coiled rhythm, before giving way to choruses that straight up command prime time Friday night viewing. Where is Graham Norton? The call has to come.
Where others posture, MSSC confess. Where others refine themselves into market-ready shapes, they smudge the edges further. There is a messy pop sensibility at work. It’s a deliberate mess, a sculpted chaos. Genre codes blur and bleed into one another: indie-dance pulse, digital distortion, devotional melodrama and a wink in the eye that says: take us now.
Born out of friendship and forged in the steam of their now-mythic sauna sessions, the trio formed of Maddy Storm, Sam Craighan and Will Brooks continue to treat their vulnerability as both weapon and salve. If My Weird Appetite cracked the door open and 122bpm kicked it off its hinges, Fantasy strides through it fully formed.
Prolific on record and increasingly magnetic live, Moss Side Sauna Club’s rise has been fuelled not by trend-chasing but by total commitment to their own beautifully skewed vision. As the industry circles and the temperature climbs, the sauna remains communal and the invitation still stands. But this time, the lighting’s better and the heat hits harder.
Fantasy was written, recorded and produced by Moss Side Sauna Club.
