“...Schecter coolly assures us. And what she says, goes.”

"The modern rock-fusion scientist has carved out a lane for herself by picking apart her favorite genres and using the remains to craft something she can call her own..."

“The track is a hypnotic and soulful ride, defined by a cinematic sophistication that

effortlessly blends elements of rock, pop, and soul.”

Today, Nashville’s Katie Schecter releases the next single from her upcoming album Empress with the suspenseful, swinging tete-a-tete “Hide My Weapons.” Co-written with Nick Bockrath, her husband and lead guitarist of Cage the Elephant, who is currently on tour supporting Oasis, the pairing is a portrait of the modern rock n roll family. “A match made in heaven, or a match made in hell,” Schecter makes the case that real love is both — Stream

While unconventional to some, Schecter and Bockrath’s family unit suits them perfectly. Their daughter, Only, can count some of her first concert experiences as still growing inside her mother while she took the stage opening for Beck, and watching her dad open for Oasis to a sold out crowd at Metlife Stadium. Schecter has her artistry, her husband’s, and her motherhood — a trifecta of the things that make her who she is.

“Hide My Weapons” is an autobiographical lovers’ quarrel told in real time. The song started as an instrumental by Bockrath, to which Schecter added the melody and lyrics straight off the cuffs of a disagreement. Loving someone intimately is tender, but it’s also knowing how to get under one another’s skin better than anybody else does. “We are passionate people, husband and wife, best friends, creative collaborators, I’d be far more concerned if we never argued,” she shares.

The upcoming album Empress (available on October 17) was recorded live to tape at New York City’s legendary Diamond Mine Studio while Schecter was pregnant with her daughter. Through this body of work, she feels transcendent in her femininity, knowing she is safe to cherish her imperfections. Holding life within her while creating this album, her personal archeology and legacy have manifested into two different forms that both hold infinite meaning — Pre-save / Pre-order on vinyl.

Produced by Bockrath, the album’s rhythm section is held down by Nick Movshon and Homer Steinweiss known for their work with The Arcs, Clairo, Mark Ronson and more. Empress also features Russ Pahl on pedal steel, Leon Michels on piano, and Matt Combs on violin, viola and cello.

To celebrate the release of Empress, Schecter will play a release show at Nashville’s Soft Junk on October 17. As a special guest in her live band, Zac Cockrell of Alabama Shakes will be playing bass that night.

So far from Empress, she has released the singles “Pay It No Mind” and “Run River Run. The former is a meditation to not sweat the small stuff, and the latter, a mix of rock, soul and pop that drives with few glances to the rearview mirror

ABOUT KATIE SCHECTER:

Katie Schecter, born and raised in New York City and currently based in Nashville, defies the limitations of any single genre with her distinctive musical fusion. With the upcoming release of her highly anticipated third studio album Empress, Schecter envisioned creating “one unified listening experience in a time of consistent polarity. I wanted to focus on what we all share as human beings – that we all dream, love, fear, have control, and lose it entirely.” While imagining Doris Troy, John Lennon, Amy Winehouse and Bill Withers all collaborating on an album at The Black Ark, Schecter describes her new record as “dubbed-out Supremes.”

Recorded at The Diamond Mine in NYC while pregnant with her daughter Only, Empress is a testament to Schecter's evolution as an artist while stepping into her divine feminine power as a mother. Produced by her husband Nick Bockrath, the album features the powerhouse rhythm section of Nick Movshon and Homer Steinweiss, with additional contributions from Russ Pahl on pedal steel and Leon Michels on piano, informing the record’s soulful core temperature.

Katie Schecter's journey as a solo artist began with a self-titled EP in 2017, followed by her second full-length release Bad For Business in 2020, solidifying her place on the map as a boundary-pushing musician. Recent career highlights include performing at a sold-out show opening for Beck in Nashville while 8 months pregnant and opening for The Zombies at SXSW Bloody Mary Morning in 2023. Additionally, her vocal talents are featured on Cage the Elephant’s most recent Grammy nominated album Neon Pill as well as the 2020 Best Rock Album winner Social Cues.
