Keeping hope alive against the odds, Romanie’s new single is a sincere and raw offering. Effortless vocals and reflective lyricism share a haunting reminder of the bigger pitcher. When Will We Lose Hope? is an honest and beautiful output, here to gently offer perspective. Sharing more, Romanie said; ‘I wrote this song in January 2024 during Adrienne Lenker’s School of Song workshop. I was feeling kind of lost in the world, wondering if making music was the right thing to do in a time of turmoil, reading the news and looking at villains ruling the world and destroying the planet. During the first lecture, Adrienne talked about having to let yourself feel things in order to write music and be curious. I cried during that lecture, and felt so inspired knowing that so many other beautiful songwriters were experiencing the same thing and suddenly writing songs and making music felt like the only straight forward thing to do.
It’s a really sad song, but I really want to emphasize the element of hope in it too, because it’s important to keep loving and caring for community. ‘
When Will We Lose Hope? is Romanie’s second single to arrive this year. It follows ‘Uh Oh’ which was released in May marking a new era for the artist, one that blends grit and grunge with softness and emotion in equal measure.
Co-produced by Romanie and Sam Swain (RAT!hammock, Obscura Hail), ‘When Will We Lose Hope?’ was recorded at Naarm’s Sunset Pig Studios and at Treehouse Studios in Pakenham with Alex O’Gorman and is accompanied by a video co-directed by Romanie and Guy Perkins (Angie McMahon, Spacey Jane). The video merges chaotic lo-fi editing and motifs with stark, coldly modern aesthetics, driving home the song’s deep anger and sorrow at government-sanctioned violence and oppression via surveillance-esque footage. Romanie filmed it herself after clocking off from a 15-hour double shift and “looking the most tired I had in weeks”.
For Belgian-born, singer songwriter Romanie Assez, her drive to make music has
always stemmed from an innate desire to express creativity through personal and engaging
storytelling. Pulling inspiration from the likes of Big Thief, Middle Kids, Elliot Smith, The Cure and more, she has nurtured her craft to reflect her deepest reflections in a way that speaks straight to the soul. Since launching in 2021, Romanie has evolved and progressed, finessing her sound that toes a line between alt, pop and indie with a gritter undertone that fuses flawlessly with her pure vocals, radiating honesty. The sound you hear today is darker and more textured than her earlier releases. Rich in nuance and strength, it's here to channel that little voice in your head, one that might not always be the most chipper, but can still make you laugh and teach you something about yourself.
Romanie treated listeners to her debut album back in 2023 'Are We There Yet?'. The record was nominated for the Australian Music Prize, winner of the triple j Unearthed x NIDA music video competition and saw her win the 2023 Upstart Award, become a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition, and finalist in St Kilda Festival’s New Music Competition.
Ever since Romanie moved to Australia in 2019 she’s been establishing herself as a powerhouse in the live music industry, touring both solo as well as with her band, supporting artists including Trixie Whitley, Telenova, Blanco White, 10cc, Yoke Lore, playing alongside Katy J Pearson and opening for Australian favourites such as Keli Holiday, The Moving Stills, Mia Wray and many more.
With lots more to come from Romanie this year - she's definitely an artist to keep all eyes on.
