For more than 20 years, Rebecca Haviland has been captivating audiences with her powerful vocals and introspective songwriting. As the fiery frontwoman for Whiskey Heart – comprised of Chris Anderson (Martin Sexton), Kenny Shaw (Dispatch), Todd Caldwell (Crosby, Stills & Nash) and Nicky Barbato – Haviland effortlessly fuses Roots Rock, Soul, and Americana.
With producer Paul Loren, Rebecca Haviland and Whiskey Heart are currently finalizing their new EP, Late Nights, which is scheduled for release later this year. The first single from Late Nights is “Monday Nights,” a foot-stomping, riff-heavy romp about the back-in-the-day New York music scene.
“This song means a lot to me,” shares Haviland. “It has an Elvis Costello meets the Stranglers vibe. It’s old-school New York with a don’t-give-a-f*ck attitude. The lyrics and the production really capture the feeling behind the entire EP.”
A native New Yorker, Haviland’s musical roots run deep, sparked by her grandparents, who were professional musicians in Westchester's vibrant supper club scene in the 1950’s. After high school, Haviland pursued music studies and interned at Acme Studios in Mamaroneck, New York. There, studio owner Peter Denenberg (Deep Purple, The Spin Doctors) discovered her talent and offered her the chance to record an EP.
“There was a time when you could go out on Monday nights, also known in the New York music scene as 'Musicians Night Off,'” remembers Haviland.
“You would bang around on Bleecker Street or in the East Village, hang out at different music venues and meet up with friends. You could see some killer music or play your own show that everyone in the scene would come out and support. You could feel the musicians and audience feeding off each other. It was a time before social media, when you would just head out to the neighborhood to find out what was going on. This is the New York that made me who I am. The city has changed a lot in 20 years, but Monday is still my favorite night to play a gig or go out and see music.”
