✈️Introducing: Merryn Jeann & wonderful new single NUN AT THE AIRPORT✈️
NUN AT THE AIRPORT arrives as an exquisite insight into the wonderful world of Merryn Jeann. Accompanied by self-directed music video it is the debut single from upcoming first full length LP DOG BEACH produced by Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey, Marianne Faithfull, Torres) out on her own cofounded label Rescue + Return Records February 23rd.
Today Merryn Jeann reveals her hypnotizing new single ‘NUN AT THE AIRPORT’, produced by Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey, Marianne Faithfull, Torres). Rich and Immersive, NUN AT THE AIRPORT comes as a flawless fusion of Merryn Jeann’s pure vocal talent, poetic lyricism and dynamic visceral sound.
Inspired by a particularly surreal moment during the pandemic, NUN AT THE AIRPORT is a melting pot of expression and imagination, transcending into a blissful, weightless escapism.
Sharing more behind the track, Merryn Explained; NUN AT THE AIRPORT was written during a compulsory (and exxy) hotel quarantine in the Frankfurt airport on my way back to Australia (where I quarantined for another two weeks).
The hotel was inside the airport, my room looking over the foyer which was even larger and more expansive than usual, in its dystopian emptiness, it's lack of bustle and chaos.
One morning I saw a gaggle of nuns walking about the foyer, with their suitcases trailing behind them up the escalator. The scene of them ascending in this surreal setting gave me the idea for this story- a nun is feeling disconnected and far from God/the spirits, so she decides the only way to understand what's happening is to talk to god so she hops in a plane to physically get closer to them/her/him/it.
The new single marks the next chapter for the emerging artist and showcases her as an otherworldly prospect who’s multidimensional sound is born to be explored and adored.
Merryn Jeann is a Naarm/Melbourne and Bundjalung Country/Byron Bay Shire based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She has crafted a genre-bending, dreamy world of soundscapes that bear an enticing musical wisdom. Sitting somewhere between Caroline Polachek, Cat Power, Weyes Blood, Feist, and Kelsey Lu, Merryn Jeann’s sound is fueled by authenticity. Her raw and honest self packaged into intricate and reflective morsels, many of which are yet to be revealed.
After living in Paris for many years, Merryn recently returned to Australia to study Fine Arts in Melbourne, however after one semester, music drew her back in and became her primary focus once more. Through this short though profound experience at school, Merryn took the opportunity to truly recognise the visual arts angle as a lens to experience, see and understand her music making process and performance, to deepen this pre-existing relationship as demonstrated in her self directed, somewhat experimental videos (under the alias MAAMDAAM) and captivating live shows. Check out ‘Floating Away’ performed live for Blogothèque here.
NUN AT THE AIRPORT is the first single to be revealed from Merryn Jeann’s upcoming full length album, set to arrive at the start of next year. It will be the follow-up to Merryn’s self-titled debut mini LP, which came out in 2019. Since its release, Merryn has released a stunning live EP ‘Live at Le Trabendo’ and nurtured many successful collaborations including ‘Shade Under Your Hands’, which came as a beautiful album from OOSO; a music and artist collective founded by herself, Chris Hill and Kyson.
Now ready to enter her next phase as a solo artist, you’ll find a profound storytelling and experimentation in her new music, aligning with sounds from the 90s and early 2000s. Merryn Jeann is a diverse artist, proudly free from the confines of a box.
With lots more to follow in the coming months, keep all eyes on Merryn Jeann
