Jeff Mills Releases 'Live at Knockdown Center' DJ Mix on Apple Music in Spatial Audio

SEPTEMBER 25, 2026—Three decades after Jeff Mills first attempted to capture the full atmosphere of Tokyo’s Liquid Room, Apple Music will release Jeff Mills Live at Knockdown Center, Mar 14, 2026, an immersive document of the New York stop on his Live at Liquid Room 30th Anniversary Tour, mixed in Spatial Audio.

The performance will arrive in two parts. Pt. 1 will be released September 25 alongside a set from Ken Ishii, followed by Pt. 2 on October 9 alongside a set from Joey Beltram. Ishii and Beltram both performed at Knockdown Center that night. The complete Mills performance will also air on Apple Music Club Radio on September 25 at 7 p.m. PT.

The new release builds on the legacy of Mills’ original Live at the Liquid Room, recorded at Tokyo’s Liquid Room in 1995 and released the following year. Widely regarded as one of the most influential DJ mixes ever recorded, it captured Mills’ uncompromising, high-velocity approach to techno and expanded what a DJ set could communicate both on the dancefloor and as a recorded work. The mix has since become a foundational document of electronic music and received a perfect 10.0 retrospective review from Pitchfork.

Mills’ original vision extended beyond the music itself. He placed six to eight microphones around the Liquid Room in hopes of creating an immersive audio document, but limitations around the final format led Sony Music to reduce the recording to stereo. After decades of being available primarily on CD and cassette, Live at the Liquid Room was released digitally for the first time in 2025, exclusively on Apple Music.

The Knockdown Center release brings that history full circle. Using Spatial Audio, Apple Music and Mills have realized the immersive concept he first pursued three decades ago. “I was trying to do this 30 years ago,” Mills told MusicTech. “This is what we were planning for.”

For the recording, Apple Music placed 14 microphones throughout Knockdown Center’s 20,000-square-foot main hall to capture the audience and room ambiance surrounding the direct stereo feed from Mills’ DJ mixer. The music was not artificially distributed across the Atmos channels. Instead, the Spatial Audio mix preserves the physical perspective of the room, with Mills at the front and the crowd responding around him.

“It’s a live recording. It’s not just music. It’s the ambiance of the room. The people. The wild animals are a part of it,” Mills told MusicTech. Mills deliberately used the music to elicit reactions from the dancefloor, and those voices and responses remain integral to the finished recording.

Across the two-part Knockdown Center mix, Mills draws from the history and continuing evolution of techno, moving through his own “The Bells,” “i9,” “Utopia” and “Life Cycle” alongside music from Robert Hood, Surgeon, DJ Funk, Marcel Dettmann, Steve Bicknell, Joey Beltram and others. It is the sole performance from the tour selected for release in Spatial Audio.
