FEBRUARY 5, 2026—Today, Montreal-Berlin producer, DJ, and vocalist Maara releases her new album Ultra Villain, a deeply personal, narrative-driven record that explores desire, heartbreak, obsession, and the freedom that comes with choosing yourself.

Rooted in trip-hop, IDM, leftfield pop, and alt-R&B, Ultra Villain prioritizes storytelling and vocal intimacy over functionality, while still brandishing Maara’s powerful rhythms and sound design. Songs like “A Moving Blur” and the title track capture the ache of unreciprocated love and the fallout of fractured relationships, while more experimental moments such as “Obsessive Compulsion” depict intrusive thoughts and emotional suffocation. The album embraces life’s heaviness, finding release in transformation over resolution.

Lead single “I’m The One You Want” captures Maara at her most self-assured. The hefty trip-hop foundation moves with hushed confidence, pairing gauzy textures and a strutting groove with an intimate vocal presence. Written from a place of hard-won self-trust, the song marks a shift toward clarity. “I realized people can only meet you where they’ve met themselves,” Maara says.

Much of Ultra Villain was written in Montreal during and after a period of personal rupture, with later moments shaped by Maara’s move to Berlin—a duality that mirrors the album’s emotional tension between comfort and chaos. The record culminates in “Come Home,” written just ahead of Maara’s debut live performance at MUTEK Montréal in 2024, a moment of return not only to the city, but to herself.

A self-taught producer who began making music as a child, Maara has long treated DJing and production as distinct but connected practices. With Ultra Villain, she marks a creative pivot toward vocal, narrative work and live performance, positioning the album as both an artistic reckoning and a statement of liberation: an acceptance of being misunderstood, and the peace that comes with knowing who you are.
