Today, Boston-based indie retro pop/soul seven-piece band Couch announce their spirited debut album Big Talk due out October 24. The first taste arrives today with "What Were You Thinking," a spirited, powerful nod to a relationship filled with carelessness and power imbalances.
With the announcement and new track, the group unveils their 36-city international headline tour, beginning November 6 in Detroit, hitting marquee rooms across North America, the UK and Europe including Roadrunner (Boston), 9:30 Club (DC), The Fonda (LA), Brooklyn Steel (NYC). Couch's forthcoming album puts their distinct retro-soul/pop sound–complete with texturally-rich horns and inviting vocals on full display. The band's signature soundscape is fuller and bigger than ever before with its electric energy, masterful, mostly live instrumentation and raw subject matter that sheds light on the band's lived experiences. Lead guitarist Zach Blankstein says, “'Big Talk' is our reflection on multidimensional love–romantic, platonic, self-love—and the kind of bold, honest connection that comes from shedding small talk and saying what you really mean. It’s moody and nostalgic, but also warm and bright—a soundtrack for that phase in life when things start to click, even if everything’s still a little messy."
"Many of the songs began in our bedrooms or as voice memos and writing sessions between two or three of us, then came to life through a deeply collaborative, full-band process." The band took the new music on the road to test it across Europe with Cory Wong and as they played some of their biggest U.S. shows to date with Lake Street Dive.
These shows allowed the band to let the live energy shape how the songs ultimately landed in the studio when recording. "We tried to bottle the chemistry we’ve built on stage over the past few years—and layer it with the kind of depth and detail the studio lets you lean into. 'Big Talk' is stepping into a brighter, bolder, and more honest version of ourselves—and learning to stay there."
Renowned mastering engineer Colin Leonard (Justin Bieber, Beyonce, H.E.R.) was thrilled to add his touch to the project, adding "I love working on Couch's music! Such a great large band sound with a vintage vibe and great vocals."
Upbeat and emotionally-charged, the first taste of the LP tells the story of being 19 and falling for a magnetic, unreliable, older presence–the sting of mixed signals, being discarded and having someone carelessly handle one's heart. Songwriter and lead singer Tema Siegel explains, "'What Were You Thinking' is a reflection on a complicated on-again, off-again relationship that I was in at 19/20 with a 26 year old musician in a band that I deeply admired."
Over soulful melodies and intricate harmonies, the song reclaims clarity and strength in the aftermath. Now, Siegel is fiercely taking her power back, and ultimately, grateful for the lessons learned. "I’m standing up for myself in a way that I couldn’t then. I’m speaking to him like a peer and letting him know he was completely out of line."
Between 2019 and 2021, high school and college friends Couch began writing and recording remotely as they began to build a following online. Their debut self-titled EP arrived in 2021 as they began playing live shows for the first time on small, self-booked tours. By 2023, they shared their sophomore EP, Sunshower, appeared at Boston Calling and Levitate played a 40 city U.S. headline tour and support dates in Europe. Now, the seven-piece band–Blankstein and Siegel alongside best friends Jared Gozinsky (drums), Will Griffin (bass), Danny Silverston (keys), Jeffrey Pinsker-Smith (trumpet) and Eric Tarlin (saxophone) are thrilled to formally introduce themselves with a body of work that is a potent culmination of Couch today–vibrant, raw, and true to who they are today.
Burning and bright, "What Were You Thinking," out now, is a brave, magnetic reclamation of power. Couch's splashy debut Big Talk is due out October 24. Don't miss the group live on tour across North America, the UK and Europe this fall and winter. See dates here and connect with the band via Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

ABOUT COUCH
Couch spent nearly three years writing and recording over FaceTime before ever stepping foot on a stage together. What began as a long-distance experiment between high school and college friends—crafting songs from bedrooms across the country—eventually fueled their self-titled debut EP and a string of singles, culminating in a breakout 20-city headline tour in 2022.
After returning to Boston, the band released their sophomore EP, Sunshower, in 2023, followed by a two-part, 40-city U.S. headline tour, appearances at Boston Calling and Levitate, and a sold-out debut UK run.
They’ve since toured with Lake Street Dive and Cory Wong (Vulfpeck) on his U.S. and European tours, with past opening slots for St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Sammy Rae, and Ripe.
Now, Couch is preparing to release their debut full-length album Big Talk, paired with a headline tour featuring marquee stops at Roadrunner (Boston), The Fonda (LA), Brooklyn Steel (NYC), and 9:30 Club (DC).
The first single, “What Were You Thinking,” is available everywhere now!
