“If one were to create a new band by means of in-vitro fertilization using a frozen embryo donated by electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire (RIP) pollinated with genetic materials from the members of Belarusian post-punk band Molchat Doma; Parisian coldwave artist Marc Nguyen Tan a.k.a. Colder; Meat Beat Manifesto as remixed by Aphex Twin; Martin Gore via an old pair of bondage trousers from 1986’s Black Celebration tour; M83 circa Saturdays = Youth, and finally some backup DNA from various Hypnagogic pop and vaporwave artists looking
to get out of debt…”
Today, New York City electronic post-punk band Public Circuit announce their new record Modern Church: arriving on September 12 via à La Carte Records. Built up by Ethan Biamont, Sean Holloway and Nelson Fisher, the band are the pagan heretics driving their scene forward with an indomitable will to live. This news is heralded with a US and European tour announcement, as well as the first single and video of the album, the Pet Shop Boys meets The Faint stab at fragile masculinity, “Samson” — Stream / Watch the official video.
Named after the character of Abrahamic mythology known for superhuman strength and a betrayal that led to his downfall, “Samson” touches on the hubris wrapped up in masculine society. Propelling the elements of a synth-pop ballad forward with punk expression, the result is a danceable groove with striking instrumentation and vocals.
“This song was named after the religious tale of Samson the warrior, a character I always thought was so cool as a child,” shares the band’s Ethan Biamont. “What does it mean to embrace or defy the concepts of masculinity in a world so choked by patriarchal ideals for gender expression and sexuality? Samson loses his hair which is the key to his masculine strength, and I think that when you stray from the binary ideas of gender, it can feel like you need some obvious physical denotion to express that feeling. Cut me free.”
On Modern Church, NYC trio Public Circuit dismantle and reassemble post-punk with surgical precision. Gone is any pretense of retro revivalism—what remains is something sharper, darker, and entirely their own. This is a record that dances in the flicker of candlelight and fluorescent glare alike, channeling an austere pulse of angular electronic instrumentation, and raw percussive rhythms all bathed with the high-gloss ache of sophisti-pop into a sound that’s equal parts ritual and revolution.
The album is overtly religious in theme; an analogical tool to explore gender identity, the fleeting faith of society, and the illicit repercussions of unresolved trauma. Public Circuit is deeply influenced by NYC’s constant feed of noise and bustle the city delivers. Channeling these pensive emotions into explosive energy, the band commits to live up to the historical behemoth of NYC music as their sphere of influence continues to expand.
Following the release of their debut album in 2024, the band took Lamb to the road with sold-out shows across 30 states including festival performances at New Colossus, Hopscotch and MACROCK. They’ll continue to spread their gospel this coming Fall on their newly announced tour of the US and Europe. While in Berlin, they will join the lineup of 8mm Festival alongside A Place To Bury Strangers and Snapped Ankles. And in the Netherlands, they will play Left Of The Dial festival.
