#Live: MXMTOON Live at Majestic Theatre
MXMTOON Live at Majestic Theatre

It’s been a moment since we last saw MXMTOON, so we had to pay a visit when we heard that she was back in Detroit. Last year, she was opening up for AJR, and now she is back with a new album and a fun lineup. With Juliet Ivy as her opener, the night was delightful. Fans adorned in feathers/bejeweled cowboy hats and Fortnite costumes waited eagerly for Maia to appear. The stage was set up to look like a bedroom, where most of Maia’s writing took place in the beginning of her career, but the mysterious door off to the side opens up later in the set to reveal a screen of imagery of subminimal places.
The night started with Dramatic Escape, I Hate Texas, and, of course, Prom Dress. During “I Hate Texas”, Maia would borrow one of the feather hats for the rest of the song. The night was a delight, and I couldn’t help but sing along with the rest of the fans. She did a few acoustic numbers before bringing the band back on for the rest, ending it with Dance (End of the World). We have been covering her shows since 2019, and it’s always exciting to see what’s next for Maia. There are a few more dates left in the North American tour before she heads off for the European leg of the tour.

More about MXMTOON
Since she was 17 years old, Mxmtoon has made exquisitely catchy pop songs that capture the complex and tender feelings we often keep hidden from the world. Over the years, the Oakland native and now Nashville-based artist’s unguarded self-expression has earned her a devoted global following, led to collaborations with the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen and Noah Kahan, and propelled her through an expansive career that’s also included hosting a podcast and authoring a graphic novel.
These tours support her November album, liminal space, which finds the singer most ambitious and emotionally vulnerable, exploring themes such as faith, growing up, and self-realization through a captivatingly introspective indie-pop soundscape.
