FOCUS TRACK “NEW LOVE (OH SO WRONG)”

IS AN ACOUSTIC FEEL-GOOD SONG OF THE VIBRANT 10-TRACK LP,

CHANNELING EXPERIMENTAL POP SOUNDS OF THE ‘60s AND ‘70s

Today, Nashville-based indie rock singer-songwriter FERGUSON released his highly anticipated new album NEVER IN MY LIFE. Feel-good focus track “NEW LOVE (OH SO WRONG)” is one of the 10 tracks found on the LP – a vibrant, singular blend of timeless classic rock and pop. Written and performed entirely by FERGUSON five years ago, the meticulously mixed album is a labor of love that is well worth the wait. Out now via The Orchard, listen to NEVER IN MY LIFE here.

On “NEW LOVE (OH SO WRONG)”, FERGUSON shares, “I’ve always thought it difficult to write happy/feel-good songs without sounding disingenuous or out of touch, but I was determined to give it a shot. This song was my attempt at a pick-me-up for anyone listening to the record. It was, believe it or not, one of the more difficult songs to record, as we struggled to nail down what seemed like a simple groove. But after many (and I mean many) percussion tracks, we decided that the drums belonged in the background and to let the percussion and the acoustic take the lead.”

In October 2020, Ian Ferguson (now going by his last name FERGUSON, much against the advice of SEO companies) was ready to fulfill his dream to quickly follow up the buzz around his critically acclaimed debut album, State Of Gold, and promptly released B Side’s record Junk. Hunkered down with his friend, producer Will Brown, in his attic studio in East Nashville for a month, FERGUSON crafted 10 kaleidoscopic pop songs that are a spiritual cousin to the experimental pop sounds of the ‘60s and ‘70s (specifically, Sgt. Peppers and Pet Sounds). Writing all of the songs and playing every instrument, he was pleased with the result. Yet, when it came time to mix it, that was a different story.

Like a chemist in a lab, FERGUSON pored over every detail. Nearly four years passed between the sessions and the completion of the album. After a few failed attempts at sending the record elsewhere to be mixed, FERGUSON decided to do it himself, despite his lack of experience. In that span, FERGUSON listened to his mixes on CD while driving around the outskirts of Nashville in the dead of the night. There, he’d carefully dissect each song, pausing to take detailed notes. Ferguson called the painstaking process a “pain in the ass,” having to add and re-record parts at friends’ houses throughout the mixing process. Yet, in the end, the route less traveled was the one necessary for him to get the result he wanted. “It’s something I hope I never have to do again,” he says of that process.

A standout track of the long-awaited record includes the quirky single “ON A DIME (COCO IS HIGH),” initially inspired by a joke song FERGUSON wrote for an anesthetized friend. Listen HERE / Watch music video HERE

“I had written this tune for a friend of mine after I picked her up from surgery,” FERGUSON explains. “She was still loopy from the anesthesia so, in an attempt to make her laugh, I sat down and recorded a demo on her computer entitled “Coco Is High”. Although sort of a joke, I couldn’t shake this melody and rhythm. So when we were looking for one last song to record for the record, I reworked the lyrics and added this chorus and wahla!”

FERGUSON had already snuck the title track of this forthcoming album into the universe. “Never In My Life” was released in 2024 and met with high praise. FLOOD Magazine, stated that FERGUSON is “pushing even further into experimental pop territory and lovelorn lyricism with his new track,” adding, “Vibrant synths, sharp guitar, and ooh-ing backing vocals all help to accent a song which effectively translates the butterflies that come with a newly unfolding courtship to music.”

The Tennessee native traveled long roads, figuratively and literally, to get to this point. The son of a fiddle player, FERGUSON caught the music bug at a young age. During high school, he played in a local band called The Kingston Springs. However, after a flood wiped out his high school, the band hit the road touring, playing Nashville and festivals like Austin City Limits Music Festival, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo. The band was on the verge of signing a label deal when they split, which allowed him to focus on his solo career. So, when it came time to record this album,  FERGUSON was already a seasoned musician.

After nearly five painstaking years, NEVER IN MY LIFE is ready for public consumption – that said, FERGUSON vows its follow-up is going to arrive much sooner (we’ll believe it when we see it). Another batch of songs is already in the works, and he jokes he has three more albums' worth of material. Until then, NEVER IN MY LIFE will establish FERGUSON as one of Nashville's most unique and fastest rising singer-songwriters.
