For those who don’t know, we have had a lot of history with the Canadian rock group Tokyo Police Club, we featured them throughout the years (From the Grog shop to the Loving Touch), and yet it’s hard to say farewell without one last (Maybe) conversation. Before the tour started, we were on the phone with Greg Alsop, moments before his last big rehearsal before their first show.
Tokyo Police Club embark on their last tour (for now), Starting back on the 13th with the tour ending with a four-day finale in Toronto. No matter if you are a fan from day one or a fan as of today, we cannot wait for you to see them at their best on this tour. Catch up on everything Tokyo Police Club on Twitter Instagram Facebook and Spotify
You guys had just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the champ back in 2021 here. And then now it's the end. I'm curious as to why this was going to be the last one
It's just that a lot has happened, and it's personal for everyone—a lot of acceptance. We’ve been doing this tour right now. It's a big departure from everyday life for a lot of us, and we're so stoked it's doing it. But it's just not a feasible goal in the long run to make it, you know, kind of count.
So, I think it's better rather than just kind of fade away and say, okay, let's just let's put a final cap on it. At least for now. I don't know what will happen. Years to come, but it felt just better to kind of have that control over it on our end and say, let's just end it on our term and make it a celebration rather than a funeral procession.
originally it was supposed to be one show in Vancouver then it became four shows, and then it became a whole-length tour. I'm curious as to why you guys went from, you know, just doing one show, then to a whole-length tour.
actual demand, like, we all kind of put up a phone call and said okay, let's try to do one last show. And our agents, as far as I'm concerned, just say like, okay, well, let's see how it goes. Like, I'll put a hold on, like, another date just in case that shows well. And so, that show sold out fast.
And then, they're just like, okay, let's add a second one. They're talking about, we could do another two if it goes that way. And so, people, you know, just kept responding to it. And then, it was a few days later, he said he didn't want to do a full tour.
Like, people are reaching out to him. He was interested in that, and we, you know, we talked about it again, and just kind of examined our lives and thought about it, it'd be so much fun to do a full tour. If that was possible I think we have people who have been excited about it. We're gonna get to show you how interesting it is. We're just gonna follow it. know, like, the interest of like people.
With that, I’m glad that Detroit made it on the full list. Were there ones you wish you could have added to the tour besides Brazil?
It feels really, it's a bummer. And it's, it's like when you see somebody commenting online, like, would you come to Winnipeg? Like, I would love to come to Winnipeg. It's just, it's such stress, even for this, a time at this point, like, you just said goodbye to them like you did yesterday.
They're like, okay, I'll see you in three weeks. They're like, what? I'm really happy to be able to do that for you, and I wish that we could get more dates. I guess that's kind of like the problem with starting with the last stage and filling in the stages backwards.
During our conversation, we talked about family life for a lot of members and the transition from going back on the road.
Have you told your kids about what you do?
We took to a show last week, I couldn’t tell what was like going on from on stage but my wife was with them on side stage. They were, you know, jumping around. It looked like they were just like dancing happily from where I could see to the stage.
I still don't know if they really know what they're doing. Like, what I was doing on there. But, they seem to have a good time with me. So, hopefully that's not a problem. I tried to explain to them that I was like the wiggles.
Of course, since this was the last tour, we had to ask the big question on our minds.
What was the biggest moment in your life as a band, Shit we did this?
Oh wow, um it I think it would have to been us doing David Letterman.
For like year and a half of us kind of doing this, we be like, hey, we got time in the studio, like, hey, we're recording a new album, hey, we're going on tour. And they're (parents) like, yeah, great. are you going back to school. Bullshit. It's like, it's just always kind of felt like, you know.
There wasn't any real, like, measure of how well the we do that was finished in their world. So, finally, with, Letterman, they're like, Oh, I get it. This is cool. So, and kind of, like, from that point on, they were always, like, the biggest champs. But before that, they were just very, concerned parents, rightly so.
At this point, we may have forgotten to talk about their two latest songs, “Just a Scratch” and “Catch Me If You Can” but it is never too late.
Were these songs just songs that you had planned back a while ago from previous albums, or was this something that you guys kind of came up with within the timeframe of, you know, after the 10th-anniversary tour?
So after Champs, so we had these two songs and they didn’t fit in, I don't know, they were lyrically and like thematically, it felt like they really fit with what we wanted to say for this, you know, kind of ending announcement and doing this all for one last time, like, They feel kind of nostalgic.
Even if they're not exactly about that, it just, perfectly fit that statement. So, thankfully it all kind of just worked out. We haven't played them live yet, but we're rehearsing them right now, before we head out on to our show.
I'm stoked to hear them too. I am curious, what's going to be like the one song you wish to have on the setlist, but you don't think it's going to be on there?
We are trying to get as many of them on as we can. I've been, like, running, like, all of them. So, all of them. And, whenever we've kind of passed by online, like, Hey, what do you guys want to hear? Kind of like a dog requests have been, like, all over the show. We're really trying to, like, get as many as we can.
With that, we had to ask for a request ourselves.
I definitely would love for you guys to add Toy Guns at the Detroit show. That's been one of my personal favorites and I've yet to hear that song live.
The last time we played that was on the forcefield tour, which is like 2004, 2015, it's been a minute since we've played it in a month, I just have the Tokyo Police Club potential playlist on Spotify, just cross things out when playing it. I’ll try to remember that when we stop by.
