More dates to be announced
Today, Phantogram, the duo Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, announce the arrival of their album Memory Of A Day on October 18th on Neon Gold Records. Right after starting a powerful 27-date North American tour with fellow alternative heavyweights Kings of Leon, including headline shows across August, September and October, they are eager to share a third song of their new chapter: “Come Alive” here. Headline shows are on sale here.
The new album launches Phantogram’s new partnership with Neon Gold Records, the celebrated indie label known for its long lineage of powerful alt pop artists from Charli XCX and HAIM to Tove Lo, MARINA and Christine and the Queens.
Phantogram explains “Come Alive”: ”The song started as a gritty chopped-up drum beat Josh made, that John Hill took and messed around with an old analog synth to make the sci-fi sound you now hear, and Sarah added in the bouncy bass line. Together we then messed with running some synths through guitar pedals, arranging a cool-sounding melody and hook, and we knew we had something special.
Lyrically, the song started from an idea of looking at life like a calendar. Our good friend Dan Wilson sat down with us and brainstormed different interpretations of a life calendar and the fleeting nature of life. For us, “Come Alive” is about embracing existence and recognizing how fragile life is. It’s about rolling with the punches, facing your fears, learning to cope with failures and success, pain and joy, addiction and connection. There are new days and new ways of turning into stone, and there are new ways to come alive.”
Memory Of A Day will be their fifth album, coming after their illustrious body of work with Eyelid Movies in 2010, Voices in 2014, Three in 2016 and Ceremony in 2020. The duo have collaborated with legends such as Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Billy Corgan, The Flaming Lips and Miley Cyrus, partnered with Big Boi of Outkast to form supergroup Big Grams, headlined sold out shows worldwide, become a festival staple and toured with artists including The xx, Muse, M83, alt-J and more.
After unveiling the first single, “All A Mystery,” which weaves together a hazy mix of synths, hypnotic guitars and beat-crushing drum machines, with mesmerizing vocals into a psychedelic sea of light. Co-produced by GRAMMY-award-winning producer John Hill (Portugal. The Man, Bleachers, Cage The Elephant, et al.).
Phantogram add: ““All A Mystery” was a line that we used to sing when we first started writing songs for Phantogram. We would sing it and harmonize it together while working in the barn turned recording studio. Back then, it was “all a mystery” to us how we came together to become a band, and 14 years later, we are bewildered that we have been doing this for so long. This song touches on love, life, death and loss. It digs into memories, and the wonder of existence. And it examines the push and pull of time on this planet, and being able to share the experience of everything all at once as a mere grain of sand on an endless beach.”
About “Happy Again” they share: “Happy Again is a song about feeling lost. Walking blindly in the darkness, in search of a guiding light. But home is a feeling that you never forget. And dark is a season that can feel never ending. But eventually the sun will rise , and the ice will thaw, making us realize that through these changes, we can be happy again.”
More about Phantogram:
Lauded as an experimental and alternative band and one that’s never been married to a particular genre, Phantogram – comprised of lifelong friends Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel – have continued to change the zeitgeist for almost a decade by consistently challenging it with their signature blend of hard-hitting beats, guitar driven dark psychedelia and electronic pop. Since the arrival of 2010’s debut release, Eyelid Movies, the duo has amassed over a billion streams, achieved one platinum-certified single, two gold-certified singles.
