May 24th, 2024 — Los Angeles, CA — Today marks the premiere of “Something I Can’t Afford” — the massively anticipated new single from Irish singer/songwriter Cian Ducrot. Released via Darkroom/Polydor/Capitol, the candid and confessional track arrives after Cian shared an early version on social media and immediately drew a rapturous response from fans. Go HERE to listen to “Something I Can’t Afford” now.
Said Cian, “‘Something I Can’t Afford’ was written in a moment where I was feeling really down about wasting time when fighting with my partner. I was on a trip to LA and I had a studio at my accommodation so I went in and sat at the back of the studio alone with my head resting on my guitar and I just started singing the song you hear today almost word-for-word, it was written in about five minutes and I didn’t really think much of it but I decided to still record it for some reason. I often have this fear of wasting time with those you love as life is so short and we don’t get enough time with anyone we love so whenever there’s a silly argument I always feel like it’s a waste of something so precious. That’s what this song is about and it came out of an exact moment of that feeling.”
The song’s emotions are laid bare for all to see from its very first lyric, with Cian softly singing, “Why are we fighting? You’re all I have, can we just put our troubles to bed and leave it at that?” And the honesty of his words is surely why “Something I Can’t Afford” is striking a chord with fans everywhere. The heightened emotions of the track are amplified by its sparse arrangement, with little added to the production beyond its lead vocal, acoustic guitar, and layered backing harmonies. The song was entirely written, produced, recorded and mixed by Cian.
Soon after coming up with “Something I Can’t Afford,” Cian shared a video in which he played a clip of the song for his girlfriend for the very first time. An undeniably heart-melting moment, the video quickly gained major momentum on social media, amassing over 6 million views across Instagram and TikTok to date.
As he channeled regret into song form, the 26-year-old artist came up with a stripped-back piece of folk-pop rooted in the soul-stirring vocal work previously showcased on his acclaimed debut album Victory — a 2023 LP that went straight to No. 1 in the UK and Ireland. Built on a minimalist arrangement of layered vocals and graceful acoustic guitar, “Something I Can’t Afford” ultimately packs a tremendous emotional power despite its exquisite subtlety.
The latest triumph in an exciting new chapter for Cian, “Something I Can’t Afford” arrives as the follow-up to his recent single “Here It Is” — an April release praised by Euphoria as a “poignant testament to the complexities of love and loss, delivered with raw emotion and striking vulnerability.”
Hailing from Cork, Cian emerged as one of 2023’s biggest breakout artists thanks to the smash success of Victory. Featuring the Platinum-certified “All For You” and the Gold-certified “I’ll Be Waiting” (both top 20 hits), Victory also included standouts like “Heaven” (winner of the RTÉ Choice Music Prize for Irish Song of the Year. In addition to performing a multitude of sold-out headline shows across the UK, Ireland, and the US after the album’s release, Cian recently co-wrote and contributed backing vocals to SZA’s chart-topping hit single “Saturn.”
On Sunday in Port Talbot, Wales, Cian will take the stage at In It Together Festival, kicking off a highly awaited run of tour dates encompassing outdoor headline shows (including a 20,000-capacity homecoming at St. Anne’s Park in Dublin), strong billing at festivals both in the UK and Europe, and select dates as special guest to Jess Glynne.
