brother bird releases the new single “quitter” today with a video premiere by Under the Radar from her upcoming album, another year due March 8 via Easy Does It Records. Join the free record release party on Friday at Duel In The Sun Tattoo Parlour in Nashville with a performance at 7pm hosted by the All Is Well Shop.
The 11-track album is her most soul-stirring collection yet with songwriting that floats through challenging times, struggling with the big questions that face humanity and how we navigate our most intimate relationships. Caroline Glaser, professionally known as brother bird draws from the Cranberries' melodic vibe, the shoegaze influence of Mazzy Star, and the guitar tones of Big Thief. Under the surface lies a common muse: waiting for something to happen. [Pre-save].
In discussing “quitter,” Caroline said, “This song has a little more bite to it than the rest of the record- which I think is significant. It came together super quickly. I actually wrote it on piano around the same time I wrote ‘something better’…they have similar sentiments. Jake Cochran (Illiterate Light) and Tim Bruns came in & tracked it with me a few days later. It was essentially just me singing along to whole notes on a piano… floating around the melody. Still kind of finding the structure of the song. Getting comfy with it. They had a ton of space to just sort of fuck around and try different things. I knew I wanted some sort of horn section, & I knew I wanted it to sound pretty big, and kind of mean. Couldn’t have picked better dudes to experiment with on this one. We all felt that day we had something really weird and special. Excited for people to finally hear it”
brother bird is music that lives in tight, intimate spaces, based on real experience, and full of the embarrassments and small indignities that come with being human, as filtered through the eyes and pen of Caroline Glaser.
Under all the pretty, soothing sounds on the record lies the particular style of Glaser. “I would say I’m a happy person and playfully sarcastic. My music is kind of like a vessel, she says.
Co-produced and written by Glaser while working with producer Owen Lewis, the first track on the record, “i’m sorry” sets the raw and honest tone for what’s to come – written about fighting for her marriage and living in that dark place. “We ended up separating and filing pretty quickly after that session, but a lot of that bled into the lyrics. I think that’s probably why I became so obsessed with adding it and making it the opening track. It felt so honest, like a veil lift, in a way,” said Glaser.
The heavy, nostalgic, emotional and reflective themes continue on “state of mind,” “ghost,” and “always” about navigating intimate relationships whereas “suburbs” veers down a road not taken, and “final scene” creates a love song for the end of the world.
Singles, “something better” and “quitter,” mirror the same confessional style, blending satire and a touch of dissatisfaction seamlessly. She also includes “famous” which addresses her first taste of success after appearing on national television as a younger artist.
“There's a lyric in ‘something better’ that I feel sums up the album pretty well: ‘and I wish that I was different for ya, but this is all that I could be.’ As a recovering people-pleaser, this feels monumental to me,” she adds.
The 2024 album follows her 2018 self-titled EP where she embraces an intimate, ethereal style of indie rock, and the debut of her 2021 full-length album, gardens both produced by her close friends, Andy Hull and Robert McDowell of Manchester Orchestra.
brother bird will join Dustin Kensrue on his national U.S. tour starting on April 24 in Austin, concluding on May 19 in Santa Ana hitting up major market cities such as Dallas, Atlanta, Nashville, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and much more. Tickets are on sale now.
brother bird has toured with Manchester Orchestra on their co-headlining tour with The Front Bottoms and has opened up for artists such as Pete Yorn, Cavetown, Pinegrove, and Bad Books, a band led by Kevin Devine and members of Manchester Orchestra. In addition, Caroline sang back-vocals on the Bad Books II: Revisited anniversary record that was released in October and they just announced Caroline as a new band member.
