Today, songwriter/guitarist/producer Eric Cannata (Young The Giant, Coma Culture) shares his single “There You Go Again,” available everywhere now via Industry Houseplant/Montecarlo Sounds. Cannata created the cinematic official music video with director Taylor Thompson. Shot on 16mm film, the video evokes 60’s Laurel Canyon and experimental filmmaker Maya Deren. “Our goal was to create a dreamy world set in an old canyon home, with a touch of surrealism, and a missed connection. It symbolizes the push and pull, miscommunication, and desire to connect that comes with relationships,” shares Cannata.
From the director Taylor Thompson: “With this video we wanted to capture the interaction between the creative process and relationships, how they intertwine and sometimes clash. It can often be a confusing whirlwind of an experience and we wanted to be sure the video reflected that.
By shooting on film it brings an authentic human feel that also stands above reality. We designed shooting techniques to emphasize the dizzying experience of the creative process and balanced that with expressionistic frames to explore the relationship side of things.”

“’There You Go Again’ was the song that opened up the writing for my album Holding Onto the Holy,” adds Cannata. “It kicked off a period of musical exploration in solitude, seeing what came naturally when I was in my home studio without any agenda, just enjoying the process of creativity. Sonically I gravitated toward a mix of vintage instruments like my Fender Coronado guitar, a jangly upright piano, and Solina String Ensemble synthesizer. I was inspired by the drama of the 60’s Wall of Sound production style. I danced around my studio, singing into an old microphone drenched in spring reverb, feeling completely free to express myself. The lyrics allude to the ebb and flow that comes along with profound love.”

Cannata will mark the arrival of Holding Onto Holy with a pair of solo acoustic live performances to open Young The Giant’s sold-out special anniversary events at West Hollywood, CA’s historic Troubadour, set for January 19-20, 2025. The shows will see performances of Young The Giant’s RIAA Gold-certified self-titled debut album in its entirety (January 19) as well as the first-ever complete performance of their critically acclaimed sophomore release, Mind Over Matter (January 20).
Holding Onto the Holy marks the debut solo album for Cannata – guitarist, songwriter, and founding member of Young the Giant, Coma Culture, and American Pets, as well as acclaimed producer of projects by Hannah Connolly and Kenton Chen.
Cannata first dipped his toes into the solo stream with 2020’s Lonely Beast, a folk and psychedelia-tinged EP inspired by solitude. Now he returns with Holding Onto the Holy, a self-produced full-length collection about togetherness and how to love life while the world falls apart, sparked by his relationship with fiancé and musical collaborator Connolly. The project had its genesis during ten days of Covid quarantine, impelling Cannata to use a scratchy throat and an old microphone to find a new voice. Taking inspiration from such classic pop and rock icons as Roy Orbison, Harry Nilsson, and The Velvet Underground, the multi-talented instrumentalist and songwriter emphasized fun and exploration to chase other muses such as childhood cartoons, folklore, and daydreams. Cannata fleshed out his evolving sound with a range of instruments including 12-string acoustic guitars, a vintage Solina String Ensemble string synthesizer, and an old upright piano, with additional accompaniment from Kosta Galanopoulos on drums and father Ernie Cannata on piano, as well as a few trusted voices in Connolly and longtime friend and collaborator Jon O’Brien, who handled mixing and additional engineering.
Eric Cannata may have started Holding Onto the Holy searching for joy in a chaotic world, but he found it dancing by himself and recording with loved ones.
