After a few years of destruction and repercussion of our mundane lives, no wonder we wish for the simple world of just being a kid. You take one look in the mirror now and you don't see it. The bags under our eyes, the "Self Care" face mask covering the stress of retail and desk jobs, the random hair we are all judging if it's gray or not, and the weight gain from the lack of fun in our life. You could say right now, everything is terrible.
What if I told you, Everything Is Terrible isn't a phrase but a portal of imagination. That we just need to pull deep within ourselves and find the right channel on that remote. Once it's there we are engulfed with the world. Everything Is Terrible, is what we need to get back to our younger selves. However, we should add; The Channel is prone to switch frequency.
EIT! is the video and performance art collective that is responsible for culling some of the bleakest video memories of the internet’s horrid history. Cat massage, The Pedo-Hunting Dino, Duane, Gerbert, and the French pubic hairstyling tutorial are a few that have wowed and confused millions of viewers around the globe. Everything Is Terrible!’s (now 8!) feature-length-found footage films compile endless pieces of forgotten ephemera into a psychedelic retelling of the American myth that is both hilariously sickening and endlessly compelling.
We had the chance to chat with one of the creators of EIT, Dimitri (@dimitrisimakis) about the film, the tour, and what they got going on. The film (which can also be purchased on VHS (& DVD), is anything but strange. Let us tell you this, it’s not what you are expecting. If you were into found footage or Analog Horror (Think Local 58, The Walten Files, and The Mandela Catalogue). All of which we had in mind after watching it. Dimitri added, “For the last, now going on 10 years we have been doing theme movies… None of the content is scary, the tones underneath are terrifying.“ The outside makes you think you are watching life lessons of being a kid but once you open the doors, each room is completely unexpected. “We’ve been collecting for so long, we sort of know that our bread and butter were kids tapes. They are everywhere like thrift stores and garage sales. If you are going to look for VHS it was a given. The way they talk to the audience/children, they are in doctrine you. Obedience is a big thing for these tapes. ” With that in mind, Imagery plays a big deal in the storytelling.
One of the images that we couldn’t help to mention was an upside-down smiling sun cartoon, it was sprinkled into the film as if it was a reminder of the real world. “Sun kinda guided us for the whole time, It just seems like the perfect summary for our film for our wold building and theme we are going for. “ Dimitri pointed out. The original of the sun was found from a baby cognitive color video. “I just kept realizing like our logo, our EIT! sunburst logo. Many people got it as a tattoo. We use to let people go to the show for free if they got it but we are starting to regret that. I’m hoping that they get tattoos of that next. ”
To the untrained eye, you would think that this was just a massive dump of childhood film; once you start looking at the scenes, you start to have this feeling that you have seen them before. A couple of seconds into the film we noticed a bowl-cut boy without his famous kazoo (If you know, you know). “Friend of the EIT, Mike Diva sent over a few from his collection,” Dimitri added. Before we were introduced to a variety of old Christian puppet films, children with god complexes, 90s commercials, and more that seem to unlock our days back in kindergarten. That’s is when we started realizing all of the fun times of watching Saturday morning cartoons. Their minor mission in this world-building is: Turning shit into gold.
Mixed in with the film were subliminal messages some of which will be uncovered once you attend the show are filled with puppetry and an assemble of the talented cast. When asked what to expect “We are all about world-building. How can we take that theme and expand it? Essentially is a hero journey, the Ice Capades of found footage fans.” Dancing teddy bears, wizards, maybe a dragon everything to keep you in tune with your childhood mindset. “This is the one we are most passionate about, when you got kids tapes as your inspiration we had to tell a live fantasy tale.”
“We try to make everything from our live shows, our movies, to pizza pals. Everything we do we maximize it. We overload we think it is, we think it our most ambient. It’s hard not to reflect that in our art in general. We want to give our people a lot.” The tour is going on right now and we can’t wait to hear your thoughts. No really, we want to hear what you thought of it. The Show, the movie, anything that can help us get back to our childhood.
