#RisingArtist : Chiiild live at the Magic Stick in Detroit

Chiiild, the category-defying band from Montreal, has shared a new single off their forthcoming EP. The track, "Back To Life" features Zimbabwean artist, songwriter, poet, and activist Shungudzo. The song is "a metaphor, a fantasy that life is just practice and somehow in the future, we can get a second shot at this." Shungudzo expands on this, saying "Chiiild and I wrote "Back To Life" on the day we met. We bonded over being African artists who want to use music to tell stories about diversity, ask questions about humanity, and unify people over shared personal experiences. All of these themes are embedded in the lyrics of our song, and Chiiild's music compliments it, being so uniquely genre-bending yet still somehow reminiscent of something you've heard, or felt, before."

With "Back to Life" and their previously released "Count Me Out," Chiiild manages to create a sound that is retro-future chill out r&b meets psychedelic, equally inspired by D'Angelo as it is Tame Impala. Chiiild already has a long list of impressive collaborations, spanning from working on a Grammy award-winning Jack Ü album with Skrillex and Diplo to Usher, Jacob Banks, Allie X and more. So with that, all said, let’s dive deep into what went on last night at the Magic Stick which is next door to the Majestic Theatre. The start of the fall chilly air was no match for the fans who waited outside for the night. A smokey atmosphere filled the mostly empty stage, set the mood for their act. Keyboards and pad deck in floral accents. Shungudzo performance was just the right kind of chill vibe for this chilly fall night. With the performance of their two songs "Back to life" and "Count me out" Chiild sang a few unreleased tracks on their upcoming album. The setlist was small with less than seven songs but they left great enough impression on the crowd to ask who they were. Overall, we defiantly recommend checking out Chiild. You can see them on tour with Emotional Oranges, which you can learn more about that in the past posts about them here.
