Austel shares her luminous new single 'Hotel Room Window View'
Today artist and producer Austel (Annie Rew Shaw) returns with her soul-stirring new single âHotel Room Window Viewâ. The track is here ahead of her upcoming headline show this Friday (20th) at The Harrison in Kings Cross and a brand new album on the way in June.
Nostalgic and sun-soaked, âHotel Room Window Viewâ is a delicate offering that gently builds and blossoms into something beautifully expansive. Originally inspired by a dream, the track is an opportunity to reflect and evoke introspection. Sharing more, Austel explained; âThis song is based on a surreal dream. I was trapped in this place I thought I wanted to be - on the surface, it was beautiful, but underneath, the woodwork was rotten, the view not so great, the company even less so.
I wrote it during the 2020 lockdown when I was back in Devon - being in my childhood hometown resulted in revisiting lots of forgotten/buried memories, alongside distance from my London life and some of the chaotic relationships Iâd been embroiled in. It weaves into memories from being a teenager, early experiences of intimacy that never sat quite right, a loss of innocence, and how echoingly heartbreaking that can be - even years later when youâve gained some perspective on it all.â
âHotel Room Window Viewâ is taken from Austelâs forthcoming second album âMirror To Mineâ which will be out later this year, on the 5th of June. Listeners can expect a meticulously crafted record that looks to be a significant milestone in Austelâs rise, marking great progression. Self-produced, the album presents a gorgeous display of ethereal alt-folk, anchored in nylon-string guitar, subtle ensemble arrangements and evocative, delicately placed field recordings. The latter gently tethers the sound in the physical world. The release of the album will be followed by a UK tour, later on in June, see below for full tour dates;
8th June - Little Buildings, Newcastle
9th June - Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds
10th June - The Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham
12th June - Pink Moon, Brighton
15th June - Bristol Folk House, Bristol
17th June - Elysium Cafe, Swansea
18th June - Green Note, London
19th June - Other Space Arts, Windsor
20th June - 12 Bar Music & Social, Exeter
Todayâs new single follows on from â30th Dayâ which arrived back in January. Powerful and compelling, it took shape as a brooding response to the relentlessness of being drawn to the wrong people. Check out the video HERE
Back in November, Austel shared 'The Beach in Decemberâ which symbolized a brand new chapter. Cinemantic and soothing, the indie-folk offering was well received, Under The Radar premiered the track calling it âwarm and intimateâ with âgorgeous stacked harmoniesâ whilst Clash magazine said the track is âcharmingâ and described it as âââa space for reflectionâ.
An accomplished singer, songwriter and producer, Austelâs extensive production work has seen her sound and talents continually expand over the years, honing her ability to create polished, indie-folk outputs that shine with an unmistakable texture and warmth. As she explores the folkier intimacies of the guitar in her newest project, she is developing a very personal sound that preserves a very spacious and open feeling.
As well as her extensive experience in the studio, Austel has spent years working as a session musician performing at festivals such as Glastonbury and touring the UK before she officially launched her solo career in 2018. Austel released her debut EP âUnfoldâ in 2018, drawing plaudits from the likes of BBC 6 Music who described her sound as âHaunting and moodyâ and The Line Of Best Fit who said: âEvery note is placed for ultimate impactâ. This was then followed by her 2020 sophomore EP âCold Loveâ which led the way for her debut album âDead Seaâ which arrived back in February of last year.
Austelâs self-produced debut record âDead Seaâ was the culmination of seven years of work. It took shape as a dreamy exploration of loss, recovery and transformation. Across 12 tracks of delicate, luscious piano songs, Austel made her mark as an accomplished and emotive songwriter, with her effortlessly ethical vocals leading the way. It marked a significant milestone in her rise and featured collaborations with Grammy award-winning engineer Guy Massey.
Originally from Devon but now based in London, Austel brings a detail-oriented, emotionally intuitive approach to each project, with a growing portfolio spanning genres and formats. She has a first-class honours MA in Creative Music Production and was long-listed for Breakthrough Producer and Self-Producing Artist of the Year for the 2024 & 2025 MPG Awards. Austel is a member of 2% Rising (a community for female and gender-expansive producers) and an advocate for safer, more inclusive practices within the music industry.
With lots more to come this year, Austel is definitely an artist to keep a close eye on.
