Robert DeLong, the genre-defying artist known for his innovative sound unveils Playlist of DOOM: After DARK, the deluxe edition of his 2024 album Playlist of DOOM due June 20 via Round Hill Records. [Pre-Save].
The multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter will debut songs from the deluxe edition live with two free shows at El Cid in Los Angeles on June 19 and July 3.
Featuring the brand-new single "SWITCHBLADE," alongside eight bonus tracks, the expanded record dives into a darker, more reflective side of DeLong’s ever-evolving sonic landscape. The new songs blend gothic synthwave, indie pop, and glitchy alt-electronica with his signature high-energy production.
Across the deluxe edition, DeLong introduces eight new tracks, led by "SWITCHBLADE,” a brooding, high-speed collaboration with alt-rock powerhouse Luna Aura that dives deep into obsession, alienation, and the shadow selves we try to hide. [STREAM + WATCH]
“The song was written by me, an old friend, McKenzie Ellis (Mothica), and Maize Olinger, “ said DeLong.“It was a rather quick but inspired affair. Sonically and lyrically it is somewhat untrodden territory for me, but diving into that dark, gothy character in my vocal performance and during production was a fun ride. The sort of high-speed intensity of the song feels almost reminiscent of drum and bass, yet is offset by the darkwave synths, lyrics, and the sort of surfy lead guitar line which recalls Joy Division or Depeche Mode.”
"I loved writing ‘SWITCHBLADE’ with Robert and Maize!,” added Mothica. “This song came together very organically and in another life probably would have released it myself. The production is so horror coated in the best way and Luna sounds amazing on it."
DeLong shares, “Luna Aura’s voice rides that line of pop directness but rock intensity and aggression that I felt fully captured the sentiment in the lyrics, and brought the song to a new level.”
This project is a bold new chapter in DeLong’s career, exploring the duality of light and darkness with dark wave synths, slacker guitars, breakbeats, and sharp, vulnerable songwriting. Throughout the deluxe, DeLong crafts a late-night soundtrack for restless minds with eight tracks seamlessly transitioning from the bittersweet nostalgia of “Cold DARK Summer” to the fevered obsession of “Somebody’s Watching” and much more.
DeLong shows the full range of his songwriting: personal and emotionally resonant. Singles like “soft boy” capture the heart of emotional alt-pop, while tracks like “Deserve It All” (featuring Mexican pop innovator Pahua) see DeLong weaving Latin rhythms and textures seamlessly into his sound. Whether he’s diving into heartbreak, nostalgia, or obsession, DeLong proves he’s not just an electronic wizard, but a true alt-pop architect, shaping raw feeling into bold, genre-hopping anthems.
“Music, for me, is always emergent,” DeLong says. “I start by chasing a melody and then the lyrics pop out. Whatever I’ve been thinking about, whatever I’ve been going through, whatever emotions I’m feeling about my relationships with people or whatever I’m worrying about in my life just inject themselves. Everything spills out. The songs that feel the most like me, as on this album, are more extemporaneous on some level.”
