Congolese-Canadian pop powerhouse LU KALA releases her highly anticipated new EP No Tears On This Ride today, April 25. No Tears On This Ride is highlighted by the release of “Work” ft. A first-time release and highlight off this project, “Work” ft. Shelailai, speaks to LU’s ‘recognizing your worth’ outlook. Of the bold new track LU says, “I’ve put so much work into myself so whoever I end up with should know that they’re really gonna have to work for it. Being with me is a full time job and I’m not afraid to fire anyone that can’t fill that position right…haha. I hope every single person who hears ‘Work’ feels the exact same way, like babes, always remember how much time and effort you put into becoming the beautiful person you currently are. Why would you let anyone that’s unworthy of you come in and f*ck up your peace? Absolutely not!”

Also included on the seven-track EP are LU’s breakout hits including the viral anthem “Pretty Girl Era”-- which just achieved Gold status in Canada – and chart-topping Canadian radio singles “Hotter Now” and “Who’s Gonna,” as well as recent singles “Cry Baby” and “Criminal.” With a growing catalog of bold, infectious tracks, LU KALA is solidifying her place as a force to be reckoned with in the pop landscape.

In celebration of the new project, LU is hitting the road for a string of live dates. The tour kicks off on May 8 at The Peppermint Club in Los Angeles, before heading to the East Coast for a show at Gramercy Theatre in New York on May 20. LU then returns to her home turf in Canada, performing at The Axis Club in Toronto on May 21, and wrapping up the run at La Sala Rossa in Montreal on May 22

This exciting news follows other career highlights for LU, including two JUNO award nominations in 2024 for Single of The Year for “Pretty Girl Era” & Breakthrough Artist of the Year, being awarded Billboard Canada’s Women In Music “Rising Star Award,” being featured as a guest judge on the season premiere episode of Canada’s Drag Race (episode here) and performing a pair of shows as support for pop icon Cyndi Lauper on her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun tour where she won over over new fans (including Cyndi herself).

The Toronto-raised, Los Angeles-based songstress and songwriter erupted onto the scene with the release of the trending “Pretty Girl Era,” now with over 30 million streams, over 355K user generated videos on TikTok including uses by Justin Timberlake, Eva Longoria, Ashley Graham and Serena Williams, and an inclusion in Fortnite. A feature and co-write on Latto’s Billboard Hot 100 hit “Lottery” soon followed, as well as the fierce power ballad “Nothing But Love,” and Canadian radio hits “Hotter Now” and “Who’s Gonna.” Her follow up single “Criminal” had PAPER raving, ‘Criminal’ is just the latest in sensational pop drops from LU...we’re excited to see what LU creates next.” Her latest single “Cry Baby” is gaining airplay support at Canadian pop radio; it was #1 Most Added at Canada Top 40 Radio for its debut the week of January 7.

“My first project was called Worthy and it was about finding self-worth and believing I too deserved to be loved…this new project is about where I currently am,” LU shares. “We’re not crying this time around…we’re thriving and feel so good about who we are. Simply put, there’s no tears allowed on this ride. It’s fun and filled with a bunch of bad bitch anthems and reminders to never settle for anything less.

“I want people to listen to this when they’re waking up, or getting ready for the day or driving down the freeway and feel like absolutely nothing can stop them and there’s absolutely no reason to pay that ex any mind. Like bitch, everyone’s allowed on this ride but the only rule is you cannot cry. Leave that shit at the door, okay? This is ‘that happy era,’ this is that ‘I’ve arrived era’!! I need this project to become the listener’s personality…like it’s a whole lifestyle, it’s a mantra!”

ABOUT LU KALA:

At the age of three LU KALA’s family immigrated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Canada, first living in Toronto’s Regent Park, and later Ajax. Gifted with a talent for writing striking pop tracks and memorable hooks, LU KALA has amassed over 100 million streams. Behind the lyrics was a voice waiting to be released, unwilling to vocally bend into the box black female performers are often expected to exist in. She’s embraced her distinctive sound, transforming her trajectory as an artist, and a woman, in the process.

The powerhouse vocalist and songwriter erupted onto the scene with the release of the trending “Pretty Girl Era,” now with over 30 million streams, over 355K user generated videos on TikTok including uses by Justin Timberlake, Eva Longoria and Serena Williams, and an inclusion in Fortnite. A feature on Latto’s Billboard Hot 100 hit “Lottery” soon followed, as well as the fierce power ballad “Nothing But Love” with social media videos reaching over 1 million views. The fiery voiced Congolese-Canadian songstress–with signature vibrant orange hair to match–is redefining what a pop star sounds and looks like.

Beyond the radio and streaming success, LU’s talents have been honored and celebrated within the industry. Her latest notable industry recognition was Billboard Canada’s Women In Music who honored LU with their “Rising Star Award” earlier this summer. She performed a medley of her hits at the ceremony prompting Billboard Canada to rave that the show was “an affirmation that this diva is ready for her spotlight.” Last year, LU was nominated for two Juno Awards–Single of The Year for “Pretty Girl Era” & Breakthrough Artist of the Year–as well as an Artist of The Year nomination at the 2024 Women in Music Canada Honours. Elsewhere, the SOCAN Foundation honored her at the Her Music Awards, in the US she was selected as an honoree “Industry Disruptor” for the TikTok 2024 Black History Month Visionary Voices List, in addition to being chosen to be a part of TikTok’s “Elevate” campaign, their first ever Emerging Artists Program, and dubbed one of VEVO’s DSCVR Artists to Watch 2024.
