On May 30 Australia’s CIVIC will release their third album, Chrome Dipped, via ATO Records. Eager to step beyond the raw, unmistakably Australian punk rock sound of their first two albums, the band break new ground with Chrome Dipped with a bold evolution in their sound, pushing into uncharted sonic terrain without sacrificing the fierce energy that defines them. Today they share new single “The Hogg” which, named for its “disgusting sounding riff,” exemplifies the band’s new direction while summoning the filth and fury of their early work. The track muses on human consciousness and the role of machines in the world and its musical aggression contrasts artfully with its delicate lyrical imagery (“sunshine on the ocean floor”). “The Hogg” premiered via  Flood Magazine who call the single “a buffet of riffage” and CIVIC told them the song is about, “staring into the abyss and seeing nothing but its pure beauty. Surface level pleasure with sinister undertones. A porcelain dancer draped in flesh, pirouetting to the infinite beat. 'The Hogg' is my reality. 'The Hogg' is my destiny.”

CIVIC announced Chrome Dipped with the title track which saw support from Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Northern Transmission, among others. Brooklyn Vegan also included the LP in their “50 Albums We're Anticipating for Spring 2025” feature calling it "...a breakout from the bare-bones sound they had on their first two records."

Having just supported Sex Pistols on an Australian tour, CIVIC will kick off their U.S. dates with two sets at Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival in Las Vegas on May 24 and 25, The run also takes them to among other markets, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City and Toronto. This summer they head to The UK and Europe.  Tickets are on-sale here and all dates are listed below.

CIVIC brought on a filmmaker to capture behind-the-scenes and in-studio footage, with plans for a longer documentary in the works. The film explores the physical and emotional place that inspired Chrome Dipped,  following the band through their journey of making the album. Watch the official trailer here

To guide CIVIC– which is completed by bassist Roland Hlavka and drummer Eli Sthapit – to these new sonic pastures the band tapped Australian singer-songwriter Kirin J. Callinan to produce the record, and legendary musician and producer Chris Townend to engineer. It was Callinan’s idea to spend a week recording at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania, a far cry from the outback house in which CIVIC laid down Taken By Force. “We’ve always done our records DIY,” says McCullough. “This time we wanted to step up and make it sound as big as we could.”

The end result is the work of a band expanding their boundaries. “We kind of stuck to the rules a little bit earlier on like, do Australian punk rock properly and all that,” says Hodgson. “But after touring around the world and seeing what all these other bands are up to it’s like, you can really do whatever the fuck you want. And so it’s fun to just kind of let go.”  He continues, “I hope people feel a little confused at first. Then a bit angry, and then feel good, and then interested, and then they feel like, ‘Oh, this is sick.’ That process exactly. I hope it’s a bit challenging.”
