LANA NAUPHAL RELEASES NEW SINGLE & VIDEO

“SURE AS THE SCORE”

DEBUT LP WILDLAND OUT ON MAY 24

NYC-based singer-songcrafter Lana Nauphal has released “Sure As The Score,” the new single and video from her forthcoming debut LP Wildland, produced by Tim Bidwell (Lucy Rose, Kate Walsh), set for release on May 24th. “For me, it’s the nadir of the emotional journey on the album. It’s rock bottom,” she explains. “This song speaks to the exhaustion of being in love with a person who’s very difficult to be in love with, for whatever reasons– in my experience, this difficulty was enhanced by a substance dependency, so there’s that angle to it too. You realize you can’t go on with this person anymore, that they will never be who you need them to be, but you’re still hanging on, running in circles with them, making a mess of everything,” she continues. “You can’t let go, even if you know it’s time.”

For the video, Nauphal visualized the setting in a smoky bar, so she filmed it in her favorite neighborhood spot in Brooklyn. Using the same camcorder her father used to make the family’s home movies, Nauphal and her crew filmed what they thought a typical night would be in this kind of difficult relationship: cycling through moments of apprehension, intimacy, and disconnect, all in the space of a couple of hours.

“This never-ending loop, where a couple of fleeting moments of connection are so intoxicating, that you stay put the other 90% of the time, dealing with all their bullshit, in the hopes of finding that glimmer in them again– having that light shine on you again,” she explains. “But it’s not sustainable, and the light never shines for long enough, but you go on and on in this loop until maybe one night you have enough.” “Sure As The Score” follows “Is It Raining In California?” and lead single and video, “Oh He Oh My.”

Wildland has a lot to do with falling in love for the first time – with a person, a group of friends, a way of living and being and creating, with oneself. Navigating a maze of Lebanese, American, British, and French identities, Nauphal first found solid ground at age 13, when she discovered 60s- and 70s-era folk. Before long, she got her first guitar, and wrote her first song: she's been rooted ever since - though the decision to pursue music as a career came later. As most stories of a soul's unfolding into purpose begin, it blissfully began with falling in love.

And then, as it does— everything unraveled. The relationship ended, the band broke apart, and Nauphal was left alone with the pieces: pieces of a life she now knew she needed to live, music she knew she needed to make. "This time, it was up to me. Piece by piece, I built myself up," she recalls. "This album, Wildland, was my glue."
