DENN REVEALS BEAUTIFUL NEW SINGLE ' IT'S HAPPENING?'
denn. is a rising NYC based artist creating a soul-baring indie sound, that touches on some deeply personal subjects and carries with it raw, striking DIY beauty. Today, denn. is releasing his new single ‘it’s happening?', which is an intimate display of vulnerability in its highest form.
What’s happening here is denn. is shaping up to be an artist successfully tapping into the Gen Z zeitgeist of blending atmospheric sounds of indie-folk with alternative bedroom pop. On ‘it’s happening?’ the listener finds solace in denn.’s heavenly vocals and poetic lyricism.
During the making of ‘it’s happening?’, denn. took inspiration from the likes of modern indie-folk greats; clairo, quinnie, Leith Ross, Grace Abrams and Phoebe Bridgers, and reimagined their well-loved melancholic style into his own, unique sound.
it’s happening is a culmination of romantic pain, fomo, and longing for what once was. A honest confrontation against a amalgamation of memories and feelings of weakness whilst fighting in close combat with the urge for a permanent release from emotional turmoil inflicted by the withdrawal of a past love.
So far this year denn. has released ‘Rottenteeth’, ‘Bugs’, ‘Boyfriend <3’ and ‘Eat Me’, which like today’s new single demonstrate his beautiful and innate sense of musicality. Entering the music scene in 2022 with ‘control’, after going through a crushing heartbreak, he found that music was the perfect outlet to release the emotions that were pent up inside him. It’s no wonder his lyrics are as poignant and sincere as they are.
More on denn...
denn. still isn’t entirely what to call the pop-infused music he makes. “It’s all grotesquely truthful though” he starts. When he was younger, denn. would toy around with his dad’s DJ equipment and started taking things more seriously when the shy, reserved kid discovered artists who were “unapologetically themselves” like Conan Gray and Beabadoobee. “They were singing about their own experiences, but I still felt heard. I wanted to do that for somebody else.”
After a string of early attempts, denn. finally shared debut single ‘Control’ at the end of 2022. A confrontational song inspired by the escapist honesty of Phoebe Bridgers, it explores the ugly side of being a hopeless romantic. A string of similarly revealing tracks followed. ‘Eat Me’ deals with the destructive aftermath of heartbreak while the glitching ‘rottenteeth’ explores denn.’s battles with mental illness and an eating disorder. The reaction from fans has pushed him to keep going. “Even in the darkest of times, there’s a silver lining and a reason to be excited,” he grins, looking to the future. “I’m ready to dive into uncertainty.”
