Just in time for the Lunar eclipse hear Luna Shadows "Whiches' Brew"

Today (October 27th) LA based artist/producer Luna Shadows shares her haunting new single “witches' brew.” Atmospheric and lush, the track was written in the midst of Luna’s struggle to create while battling depression and anxiety, delving deep into an ocean of darkness and uncertainty before soaring up to the surface to break through into a ray of hope and light. “witches' brew” is the leading single from Luna Shadows’ upcoming sophomore LP.

“witches' brew” is layered and complex, pairing a tender acoustic guitar with ethereal strings to create a sumptuous sonic twilight, wreathed in shadows. Luna’s tender vocals float high above, luminescent and clarifying as a full moon. The juxtaposition between Luna’s serene whisper and cuttingly specific lyricism is sharp. “witches' brew” bravely explores the way women are ostracized and punished by society for failure to conform, and Luna does not shy away from this pain as she sings, “back in the day / they would have made an incision / cut out my brain /wouldn’t have been my decision / earlier on / would have been one of those women / burnt at the stake / not a chance for forgiveness.”

Luna says this of the celestial track:

“‘witches’ brew’ is a diary entry from rock bottom, a soundtrack companion to what felt like an insurmountable depressive episode - specifically in my case coping with premenstrual depression & anxiety (PMDD). It’s from a moment where I felt like I would never again have the capacity to experience joy, like I would never again see the sun. While I’m in it, I imagine the feeling will go on forever — until the light slowly appears, and I recognize that this darkness is part of a cycle that will eventually come to a close.”

The accompanying music video, which Luna directed herself, is set in a misty graveyard. Under a star spangled sky a black kitten acts as Luna’s familiar as she studies the occult and practices witchcraft, which Luna states is a metaphor for the creative process.

With “witches' brew” LA based artist/producer Luna Shadows’ is opening a window into her memories. The leading single from her upcoming sophomore LP promises all the polish of her previous work while demonstrating a deliberate and intimate lyricism. Shapeshifting for us, she trades sparkling electro pop for emotive indie folk rock. Unveiling her background as a classically trained musician, she composed the string arrangement and produced orchestral elements for this melancholic ballad. As the upcoming album’s sole lyricist, she searches for her best self in her darkest depths. Pieced together digitally with long-distance co-producer Bradley Hale (Now, Now) over the pandemic, her vision is clear, nostalgic, and satisfying as a full moon.
In 2021 Luna Shadows shared her debut LP Digital Pacific, a collaboration born out of her experiences working with Bradley Hale and Thom Powers (The Naked and Famous), Digital Pacific is Shadows' manifesto, where as songwriter, producer, and creative director, she's executed self-possession across an expansive 18-tracks. The album peers through a digital lens and explores deeply human themes like self-affirmation, anxiety, and disillusionment. Shadows weaves a tapestry of hypnotic electronica throughout; her songs creep and consume, capturing listeners in a haze of mesmerism. Both visually and sonically, the album has a recurring theme of digital distortion and glitch. The theme of modern technology is not only lyrical, but extends into the production itself: pushing audio and visual to digital limits and seeing what happens. The glitter of the record is bit-crushed beeps, iPhone memos, lo-fi elements, reversed oceans, bad streaming crunch, broken synths, and white noise.
