LA-based electro-pop group NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS specializes in chaotic night-out bangers and upbeat party pop anthems. Today (May 20th) marks the arrival of the group’s debut EP BAD THINGS COME IN 3’S. The 6-track project bursts with deviant drops, distorted synths, and undeniable hooks. Finished off with NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ signature quippy lyricism, “BAD THINGS COME IN 3’S” proves that NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS will bring the party to anyone and anywhere, no matter where they go.

NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS say this of the new EP:

“The project is really about universal experiences–like falling for shitty guys, peer pressure, cancel culture, untrustworthy friends, relying on substances or others for confidence, etc. We just wanted to write about all these things in kind of absurd ways.”

New track “survival of the littest” is hard-hitting and synth-heavy, making the bold comparison that alcohol tolerance is a form of social Darwinism. The track is glittery, elastic, and resonating with an addictive bassline. The satisfyingly drastic drop will have the entire room on its feet. Sprinkled with glistening vocal ad-libs and cheeky pop-culture references, “survival of the littest” is a perfect example of NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ unique charm.

Produced by Jahs (GAYLE, Yungblud), the opening track “bad things” is a delightfully diabolical introduction, showcasing each member’s unique personality on the glitchy and catchy tune. NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS make their own cleverly distorted version of “The Powerpuff Girls” introduction. Whilst The Powerpuff Girls were created using sugar, spice, and everything nice, NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS say that their group was created from “chaos, vices, and an existential crisis” making them the “perfect little trainwrecks.”

On “8ball,” NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS bring a triad of unique vocals paired with uninhibited lyrics and bold ad-libs that give the listener a feeling of being surrounded by friends at a raucous party. Incorporate the danceable drops and sticky, savory electro-pop beats and “8ball” becomes the ultimate track for the perfect night out.

Maneater anthem “did it hurt” is equal parts charming and scathing; a glossy take-down of “fuck boys” that compares trifling men to Satan. The tune is satisfyingly self-aware, with NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS acknowledging their own desire for devilish men.

Sonically “Sneetches get stitiches” is pure pop perfection, finding a sweeter stride amongst the rest of the gritty and grimy EP. Lyrically, the track is as witty and ferocious as ever, a searing critique of fake friends and inauthentic relationships.

Closing track and previous single “lava” toes a daring line between upbeat dance track and unnerving social commentary. The elastic bassline and pounding, heart-beat-like rhythm creates an effervescent atmosphere, but the fierce lyrics allude to something darker. The song's production elements are layered and rich, with eerie background vocals and an ominously hypnotic backing track that cements the tune as an absolutely chilling bop.

More Info:

NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS is a girl group for the new age. NTMC takes influence from all corners of pop-fusing hip-hop, hyperpop, and electronic music. NTMC was literally born on the internet. The three members, Gabi Gotts, Perrin Xthona, and Tammy Gonzalez wrote their first single “bev hills” via zoom during the 2020 quarantine—so it’s fitting that the group has developed a cyber aesthetic. Their songs are deliberately designed to be ahead of the curve- running rampant with nods to modern subculture throughout their lyrics. The trio has been featured on Spotify playlists hyperpop, SALT, mistfits 2.0, teen beats and have surpassed seven million cumulative streams in their early career. Garnering collaborations from pop provocateurs like Alice Longyu Gao, NTMC is the antithesis to your typical girl group—and they’re creating the space that they need to shine.
