As long-time fans of Porter, we knew we had to see him on his latest tour, as did many of you! Porter stopped by the Filmore in Detroit to a sold-out night filled with dancing and belting out to the top of our lungs (Still recovering over here). The show started with Eric Coa inviting us to his bedroom.

Porter kicked off the night straight SMILE ;D Set with the first round of confetti letting us know this wasn’t just any Porter show. Each album (minus Virtual Self) was divided into three acts. Kicking off the SMILE ;D, we started with Knock Yourself Out XD, Perfect Pinterest Garden, and Kitsune Maison Freestyle. At this point, we have to talk about the set design for this show. Not only were there confetti canons shooting heart-shaped confetti, giant cat, and a second floor in the shape of a billboard. Not only was he roaming around on stage but he was up on the billboard platform doing the same thing (of course he was tethered for safety)

Going into the section act: Nurture, Porter went straight into Wind Tempos, Muscians, and Something Comforting. One of the songs on our bucket list we wanted to hear live was Everything Goes On, the single that Porter did with League of Legends. If you are wondering if we flipped out when he started playing it right after Something Comforting, the answer was obviously yes. The one thing we loved about this show was that it was nothing like his previous shows, as there was a full live band. At one point, Porter talked about the complexity of Something Comforting and how two pianos are playing at the same time in the song but was blown away that his pianist figured out how to do it. One of our favorite moments in this act had to be when a fan shouted out B*tch during the song Mother not only causes him to not finish the song without acknowledging it.” A deep lore cut, I didn’t expect anyone to remember that” Porter said

Act three wasn’t just a finale but a homecoming. Worlds started with Sea of Voices / Sad Machine, Divinity, and Fresh Static Snow. Just like the first time and even that night, we and many others were tearing up when Sad Machine kicked in. As for the Encore, he ended with Shelter and Cheerleader and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Porter’s most ambitious and vulnerable album to date, SMILE! :D is laden with social commentary on the paradox of modern artistry, internet culture, and celebrity. The album untangles Porter’s complicated relationship with fame in the digital age, and the uneasy balance between authenticity and performance – from Porter’s juxtaposed position on trendsetting with “Kitsune Maison Freestyle” to his views on fandom on “Cheerleader”.
Across the record, Porter offers a unique blend of honest and sarcastic lyricism, exaggerating the depths of his poignant opinions with cheeky phrases like “Bitch I’m Taylor Swift” on “Knock Yourself Out XD,” alongside more earnest moments on songs like “Russian Roulette” and “Perfect Pinterest Garden”. SMILE! :D touches on themes of self worth and acceptance, social stigmas and expectations, and the ups and downs of stardom from his teenage years through adulthood. 
SMILE! :D is a 10-track display of the maximalist hyperpop, alternative, pop punk, and indie styles that define Robinson’s new era, as premiered by Robinson at a sold-out intimate listening party at Echoplex in Los Angeles, where he played the album in full to fans for the first time. 

About Porter Robinson:
At age 18, the North Carolina-based producer and songwriter burst onto the scene with a complex, bombastic brand of electro-house. Following the major success of his 2014 debut album Worlds, Porter released the RIAA Gold single 'Shelter' with Madeon in 2016, followed by a Shelter Live Tour spanning 43 dates and four continents. The following year, Porter began releasing music under a new alias, Virtual Self, which led to his first Grammy nomination for the BBC Radio 1 hit single 'Ghost Voices.' In 2019, Porter put on the first Second Sky Festival, which sold out all 30,000 tickets for the two-day festival in a single day. In both 2020 and 2021, Porter Robinson hosted editions of his virtual festival Secret Sky, amassing over 6 million viewers combined, and which came to be regarded as the most sophisticated virtual festivals of its time. Later in 2021, following the release of sophomore album Nurture, Second Sky Festival made its return to the Bay Area, selling out 40,000 tickets in a single day. Immediately following, the Nurture Live North American Tour sold over 150,000 concert tickets and was the highest grossing electronic tour of 2021. In 2022, in partnership with Riot Games, Robinson released “Everything Goes On” surpassing 100 million global streams. Later that year was his debut of one of two exclusive full live band performances, first at Second Sky 2022 and again in 2023 at the Coachella Main Stage.
