Today, brilliant newcomer aimei 媚 (Pronounced EYE-MAY) shares her 4-track debut EP “City’s Violent” that plays and feels very much like a show that fits the Anglo-Chinese’s star-in-the-making’s  ‘pop-noir’ matra.

Speaking about the themes of the City’s Violent EP, aimei 媚 explains Sometimes I feel like I’m battling between the constant struggle of keeping my head above water and chasing a dream in a city where everyone seems so disconnected. Leaving behind unrecognizable past versions of myself to follow a path that’s blinded with lights leaves a rush of uncertainty that’s yet fulfilling at the same time. I have found love and silence whilst making this EP and it’s songs represent my growth in a city so violent.”

Walking through the tracklist, listeners will first land on the City’s Violent’s title track, produced by Boo, and a song that embodies aimei 媚’s first steps as an artist based London via Manchester via Beijing through a rich tapestry of electronic production and traditional songwriting. Track 2 is ‘Clouds,’ a sleek and sophisticated dance moment, produced by Joe Brown, which saw aimei 媚 grace the cover of Spotity’s Planet Rave playlist. Then there’s is the shape-shifting ‘Unfinshed Business,’  also produced by Boo, that flitters gloriously between subtle, emotively moving songwriting and breathtaking syths.  It was with this track that Aimei became one of the current Spotify’s Fresh Finds Artists of the month.  Finishing off the show in style, the EP finishes with aimei 媚’s outro track ‘Dream On’ which is hopeful explosion of sound where her heritage collides in full colour.

Unlike many debut EP being released in 2024, aimei 媚’s first extended play already feels rich in self-awareness.  The City’s Violent EP takes a wide snapshot of her heritage, drawing on the influences of having spent her formative years immersed in Manchester’s vibrant electronic scene, and also from London (where she now calls home) where much of the EP was written and then cultivated. aimei 媚 adds “My Chinese heritage is also deeply ingrained in who I am, and I’ve always sought to express that through my music. Weaving Mandarin into my EP, Citys Violent, feels like a crucial fusion of my identity—a bridge connecting my roots with the essence of my musical expression.”
