#live Adult. Last night at the City Club

Just outside of the Detroit MGM Casino lies the Leeland Building: An almost Abandon Historic building. Almost is the keyword as the Leeland plays host to a small club with guests reliving the 90s-style dance scene. The City Club hosted ADULT. To a nearly sold-out night. ADULT has been on a nationwide tour ending it in their hometown before they kick off their Europe tour. It was an exciting night for those who were not familiar with the scene and had just discovered ADULT through their latest album Becoming Undone.

Both sides of ADULT.’s Becoming Undone bristle with strident acidic revolt and black leather sequential circuits, unhinged and unforgiving. From technoid blitzes to slower tempos of purgatorial unraveling, Becoming Undone showcases a breadth of vocal FX. Vocalist Nicola Kuperus sounds alternately indignant and possessed at times, decrying a deluded world's crimes, fears, and failings. Throughout, the duo’s chemistry crackles with revulsion and strobe-lit dissent, equal parts exorcism and denunciation. “Humans have always been pretty terrible,” Kuperus explains. “But every year the compromises of culture just accelerate.”

After a quarter century of nearly nonstop activity, the dystopian Detroit synth-punk institution have perfected a strain of stylistic cohesion in the album format. The making of Becoming Undone began in the latter half of 2020 against a backdrop of unprecedented flux and seismic isolation. The duo (Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller) kickstarted their muse by sourcing fresh additions to the rig: a vocal loop pedal for Kuperus and Roland percussion pads for Miller. Reconnecting with legacy influences like the politicized industrial percussion of Test Department and the queasy miscreant synthetics of TG’s 20 Jazz Funk Greats sparked a series of fruitfully frenetic sessions, centered on themes of impermanence and dissonance.

The album is also freighted with a more personal pain, as Kuperus’ father passed away during the height of the pandemic, just before the album took root. As his hospice caretakers, she and Miller faced the banality of finality, surrounded by objects drained of meaning, “the joy of having a body, but also the drudgery of having one.”

ADULT. bring Becoming Undone’s artwork to life in their powerful new self-directed video “Our Bodies Weren’t Wrong” which features dancer Shannon White. “Askew interior architectures merge with estranged domesticity,” ADULT. describe. “The body moves rightside up / upside down / in the doorway / out of the doorway in this suburban void filled with too many doors to realms of the unknown.  Feelings of disorientation and liminality interlace with elements of ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ and the dance meets horror of ‘Suspiria’.” Becoming Undone is out today via Dais Records across all platforms and media.
