#Risingartist: We chatted with A STARR about her new song and video No Filter.

Singer, songwriter, and performer A STARR has released the music video for her debut single "No Filter," out today. Directed by Patrick Tohill (NF, Kyd The Band, Jessie Murph), the visual for the track — which highlights her bold vocals over skittering 808s and swaggering baselines — is a nod to coming-of-age classics like Clueless and Bring It On as A STARR exudes confidence and main character energy, stepping into the spotlight as her most authentic self.

We had the chance to chat with A Starr about No Filter along with working with producer Poo Bear.

How did you come up with your name?

It has a special place in my heart. My name's Alex and Star is actually my dog's name. So it was joined together - I wanted to be with star, have the star with me, and have me with it.

So you have a new song currently out. No filter. I'm curious. What is no filter all about? No fears. to be themselves. Embrace. Who you want to be? Like I said, Like unapologetic.

Because this song is not something that you did by yourself. You worked with a lot of people like Producer Pooh bear. What’s it like working with him?

Oh, it was an amazing experience. I've learned that getting to work with him that there's so much more to just writing, you know, there's a purpose behind it. There's a purpose behind everything.

He’s worked with so many people from Justin Bieber to Usher was there any kind of pointer he kind of gave to you? How to write. A story, where to start with the story, how to feel this story. Be yourself through at all.

In terms of structure-wise, was there any kind of like, new challenges that you had to discover through that process? I would definitely say so. I mean, I'm creating every day, doing something new, and I definitely learned a lot working with Poo Bear.

And this is your big first song out into the world. What I found interesting about the song was the use of an autotune/reverb effect when you say the title track name, Was that intentional? (I love the concept of putting a juxtaposition in a song.) that was intentional and it was poos idea too. Pretty much.

So with the new song out, how. Are you feeling about it? I feel great. I'm finally, really happy about it too and just excited to see where it goes and see what's in store.

One of the big things I wanted to mention was, you know, in the lyric video we had a little bit of a sneak peek of a potential music video. Is the music video coming alongside it?

Yes, there is. Recording the video and getting to be on set was an amazing opportunity. I never really experienced the regular high school life because I was always homeschooled. So it was a fun experience.

Co-written with Grammy-nominated Songwriter/Producer Poo Bear (Justin Bieber, Usher, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez) and produced by Grammy-nominated DJ/Producer Shndō (Justin Bieber's "Peaches"), "No Filter" introduces A STARR as a bold personality with an even bolder voice, encouraging listeners to drop the social media façade and be the real version of themselves.

“Nowadays, people hide behind social media. They’re pretending to be someone they’re not. They’re just following what everyone else is doing though. Instead of being a follower, be your own leader. I’ve realized that over these last few years. The real people will accept you for who you are, and that’s all that matters. You don’t need a filter,” (A STARR adds.

Gravitating towards music since she was a toddler, A STARR quickly found a creative outlet through entertaining and began to develop her presence as a performer, acting in multiple school plays and performing in talent shows. It wasn’t long before A STARR caught the attention of Poo Bear who saw something different in the young artist and they immediately dove into writing and recording with the legend's support, unlocking her talents like never before.
