Today (April 22nd) electronic-pop trio NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS return with their latest single “bad things.” Brazen and audacious as ever, NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS use “bad things” as a delightfully diabolical introduction, showcasing each of their unique personalities on the glitchy and catchy tune. Produced by Jahs (GAYLE, Yungblud), “bad things” is the third single from NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ upcoming debut EP BAD THINGS COME IN 3’S out May 20th

“bad things” opens with NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ own cleverly distorted version of “The Powerpuff Girls” introduction. Whereas The Powerpuff Girls were created using sugar, spice, and everything nice, NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS say that their group was created from “chaos, vices, and an existential crisis” making them the “perfect little trainwrecks.” The Powerpuff Girls references abound throughout the rest of the track, which is grungy, grimy, and playful. “bad things” is a testament to NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ success at finding cohesion as a group while still maintaining their own individuality.

NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS share this about their new single:

“The opening track of our EP, ‘bad things,’ is the song where we get to introduce ourselves as individuals. The three of us have very distinct personalities and want that to come across in our music. Starting out with our own take on the spoken Powerpuff intro, we invite listeners to take part in the dichotomy of being a baddie but also low key a mess. The three of us truly do embody chaos, vices, and many existential crises, so it made sense to have those be the ingredients in our metaphorical Powerpuff style birth, as well as the fact that those are the overarching topics of the EP. Being able to write about concepts like these in our biting-yet-lighthearted way is the reason we started NTMC in the first place, and we feel that this song demonstrates us coming into our own as artists.”

"bad things" follows the single “lava" released this past March. “lava” toes a daring line between an upbeat dance track and unnerving social commentary. The elastic bassline and pounding, heart-beat-like rhythm creates an effervescent atmosphere, but the fierce lyrics allude to something darker. The song's production elements are layered and rich, with eerie background vocals and an ominously hypnotic backing track that cements the tune as an absolutely chilling bop.

In February, the group shared the first single from their EP “8ball." The track, NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS brings a triad of unique vocals paired with uninhibited lyrics and bold ad-libs that give the listener a feeling of being surrounded by friends at a raucous party. Incorporate the danceable drops and sticky, savory electro-pop beats and “8ball” becomes the ultimate track for the perfect night out.

NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ “BAD THINGS COME IN 3’s” EP is out May 20th.

NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS is a girl group for the new age. NTMC takes influence from all corners of pop-fusing hip-hop, hyperpop, and electronic music. NTMC was literally born on the internet. The three members, Gabi GottsPerrin Xthona, and Tammy Gonzalez wrote their first single “bev hills” via zoom during the 2020 quarantine—so it’s fitting that the group has developed a cyber aesthetic. Their songs are deliberately designed to be ahead of the curve- running rampant with nods to modern subculture throughout their lyrics. The trio has been featured on Spotify playlists hyperpop and SALT and have surpassed seven million cumulative streams in their early career. Garnering collaborations from pop provocateurs like Alice Longyu Gao, NTMC is the antithesis to your typical girl group—and they’re creating the space that they need to shine.
